Surfing is partly about losing track of time and being in the present moment. In the not-so-distant past, it would be rare to see a surfer with a watch and if they were wearing a watch it might have been a simple waterproof digital just to tell time. However, the rise of smartwatches has changed that.
The development of wearable technology, GPS, and integrated surf-specific apps (such as Dawn Patrol or Surfline) has revolutionized surf watches.
You now have the ability to track your surf sessions including wave and water time, top speed, and total distance surfed.  The most advanced GPS watches that integrate with these apps also let you save your favorite beaches and view your waves on a satellite map.
The apps also give you a way to challenge yourself and track your personal surfing performance.  A few of the high-end watches can even connect to beach webcams so you can record your rides to share with friends, post to social or for your own detailed surfing data once you’re back on the beach.
Whether you’re into kitesurfing, windsurfing, or traditional longboards, these are the best surf watches currently available on the market.

Dedicated surfing functionalities nicely accentuate the rugged no-frills aesthetic. This smartwatch meets the U.S. military standard 810 ratings which means it has impeccable shock, thermal, and water resistance.
As we have noted, the Garmin Instinct Solar is chock-full of features such as a GPS utilizing GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo navigational satellites. The Instinct Solar is also compatible with the health monitoring Pulse Ox app.
As for its surf-centric capabilities, the Instinct Solar Surf Edition comes with a Surf Activity Profile which features that track the number of waves surfed, tide data, maximum speed/distance traveled, and other crucial ocean and weather condition data.
Add its solar-powered technology, and you have yourself a highly reliable smartwatch companion. This smartwatch will undoubtedly enhance your experience whether you are passionate about surfing or outdoor activities in general.
Integrating the Garmin Instinct with the premium Surfline Sessions™  app takes the watch to the next level. Surfing in front of any of Surfline’s network of hundreds of beach cams allows you to record every ride and track your GPS data. You can share your ride data and videos with friends or social media and review your ride data including waves caught, distance paddled, swell details and calories burned. This app is also compatible with the Rip Curl Search GPS 2 and Apple Watch mentioned below.

G-Shock G-LIDE (GBX100)

G-Shock GBX100-7 Black/White One Size
G-Shock GBX100

Read Amazon Reviews

G-Shock has several watches in its lineup that feature tide graphs and mood data, but the G-Shock GBX100 was specifically designed as a watch for surfing.
The design of this tide watch is intuitive and user-friendly buttons and functions that you’d expect from G-shock. This is a well-rounded and reasonably priced tide watch with features that surfers will appreciate.
The GBX100 model is also compatible with the G-Shock Move app to use other key features such as tide graphs and storage that holds up to 3,300 locations.
Standard G-Shock functions – stopwatch, countdown timer, and auto-calendar but this watch also includes World Time feature (38 time zones), moon data, high and low tide times, sunrise and sunset times, and a power-saving mode. The watch also comes with G-Shock’s signature durability and also comes in a variety of color variants including white, teal, and black/white pictured above.
It’s unfortunate that G-Shock did not include their Tough Solar technology on this watch as it does feel like a missed opportunity. If solar is a top priority for you, we’d suggest the Garmin mentioned above or one of the other G-Shocks below.

Apple Watch Series 6

New Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS, 44mm) - (Product) RED - Aluminum Case with (Product) RED - Sport Band
Apple Watch Series 6 GPS

Besides the apparent hardware upgrades from its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 6 also adds a slew of features that surfers will unquestionably welcome with open arms. This praise is due to the Series 6 being compatible with the Dawn Patrol and Surf Watch apps.
The Apple Watch Series 6 comes with a 50-meter water resistance rating which means it can handle shallow-water activities like swimming and, you guessed, surfing. The great built-in GPS also makes the Series 6 an excellent outdoor accessory.
We also love the always-on display, which is quite helpful when surfing, not too good on battery life, though, so we suggest you only turn on this feature when necessary.
As for its surfing features, the Dawn Patrol app has tidal data, wind speeds, moon phases, and weather information. You can also fully customize the Series 6 to suit all your surfing needs. In addition, the Apple Watch Series 6 has a fairly reasonable price tag.

Rip Curl Search GPS 2 Digital Surf Tracking Watch

Rip Curl Men's SearchGPS Series 2 Quartz Sport Watch with Polyurethane Strap, Black, 25.75 (Model: A1144-BLK)
Rip Curl Search GPS Series 2

If you are looking for a watch with features that primarily focus on improving your surfing experience, then the Rip Curl Search GPS 2should be right up your alley.
It comes with a slew of great functionalities such as real-time wind and swell reports along with the standard GPS surfing tracker.
There is also paddle tracking and tidal data that should further improve your surfing experience for the better. While designed for surfing, the Rip Curl Search GPS 2 is also an excellent option for other outdoor sports such as marathons, swimming, and snowboarding.
In addition to those outstanding surfing features, the Rip Curl Search 2 is also considerably more affordable than most of its competition in the market. You can also connect this surf smartwatch with your smartphone to gain access to several nifty applications.
As a surf smartwatch, the Rip Curl Search 2 is one of the best in the market. However, this focus on surfing activities does limit its overall functionality compared to, let’s say, the Apple Watch Series 6, which is more well-rounded.
That said, if you are incredibly passionate about surfing, there are few watches out there that can enhance your experience in your favorite water sport other than Rip Curl.

Rip Curl “Next Tide” Watch (A1137MID1SZ)

Rip Curl Men's Quartz Sport Watch with Silicone Strap, Black, 21.9 (Model: A1137MID1SZ)
Rip Curl

We have another entry from Rip Curl; this time around, the Next Tide model garnered a lot of praise for its excellent surfing activity features. This surf tech watch has a water resistance of up to 100-meters, the Rip Curl Next Tide making it suitable for swimming and snorkeling.
The Next Tide’s most prominent feature is the pre-programmed global tide locations to help you determine which spot has the best waves. But, as the name implies, this Rip Curl smartwatch can display real-time tide data and forecasts for tomorrow and beyond.
It comes with an EL backlight, an excellent addition, but we find that it lacks in the brightness department. However, unless you prefer surfing in very low light, we don’t see the somewhat lackluster backlight as much of an issue.
Overall, we have another fantastic surf-centric watch from Rip Curl. At the same time, the surf-focus features might seem to limit the watch’s application. This aspect also means that this is a specialist surf watch that excels in a particular field. Rather than a watch designed for an all-around application.

Nixon Rival Women’ Digital Surf Watch (A1236)

Nixon Mens Digital Watch with Silicone Strap A1236-2015-00
Nixon Rival

Read Amazon Reviews

Next up, we have an excellent entry for the ladies in the Nixon Rival Digital Surf Watch.
The Nixon Rival features similar aesthetics to the Nixon Base Tide but with more features. The Nixon Rival also incorporates a silicone band, which is generally preferable to nylon fabric regarding comfort when taking part in marine activities.
Like the Rip Curl watches, the Nixon Rival also utilizes features focusing on providing convenience for surfing. Such features include pre-programmed tide information for up to 550 beaches around the world.
Along with 100-meter water resistance and a custom negative LCD screen, the Nixon Rival is an excellent surf watch. Besides its surfing features, this digital watch also features a second-time zone, countdown timer, chronograph, alarms, and sunrise/sunset time.
The 38mm case also makes it ideal for surfers with a smaller wrist. At the moment, the Nixon Rival comes in blue and white color variations. Hopefully, Nixon will start including more color variants to the list to enhance its appeal.

Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Solar

See Amazon Reviews | See on Garmin.com

If you want one of the best multi-sport watches from Garmin, then the Fenix 6 Pro Solar could be the one you’re looking for.
The Fenix line by Garmin is one of the most premium multi-sports watches on the market. The recent release of the Solar Pro model takes the impressive build quality and features of previous Fenix models to the next level, now with a solar-powered battery that gives you up to 36 hours of full GPS usage. Battery life has been one of the biggest barriers to using full-featured sports watches that require GPS (especially if you want to track all your ride data), so this is a major improvement over previous models.
The Fenix 6 is built to US military standards for thermal, shock, and water resistance. Similar to the previous Garmin models presented, the Fenix 6 Pro and Sapphire Editions also have built-in activity profiles for almost any sport you can think of from adventure sports to even yoga and Pilates. Apart from the multi-sport functions, the Fenix gives you advanced health and fitness tracking such as Pulse OX monitor and some less common features including hydration reminders and stress and relaxation tracking (although most surfers already have those last two under control).
It integrates with the Garmin Surf Tracker2 app as well as other 3rd party surf apps.

Casio Frogman G-Shock Tough Solar GF-1000-1DR

Casio Watch (Model: GWF-1000-1CR)
G-Shock Frogman (Model: GWF-1000-1CR)

It also has all the other basic features of a Casio G-Shock such as the auto calendar, world time, alarms, hourly time signal, stopwatch, and countdown timer. It also has a backlight that may be set in a hands-free mode so the backlight automatically activates when you flick the watch vertically.
If you’re looking for a great surfing watch that is also a high-end tactical watch with superior water resistance, rugged build quality, and solar power, the Frogman is definitely worth a close look.

Lastly, compared to the previous G-Shock timepiece presented, this one’s less bulky and quite light, weighing only 1.98 ounces.

Nixon Base Tide Pro (Image: Amazon)

The Nixon Base Tide Pro is very much like the previous Nixon Base Tide but with some upgrades. Its interface is still pretty simple but it helps present only pertinent information. Among its special features are the tide information for 550 pre-programmed beaches from across the globe, the time and height for high and low tide, wave timer, and the sunrise/sunset. It also has a chronograph timer, dual time, alarms, and backlight features.
You may toggle its digital display to show either the tide graph or the date. In relation to this, it is noteworthy that even the buttons of the watch are water-resistant so you can easily access them even on water. Surf Watch Buying Guide

Before you finalize which surf watch you’d purchase, here are the aspects of the watch that you may want to double-check to ensure that you’ll have a great surf watch.

Water Resistance

When taking a watch in any water activity, whether that may be leisure or sports, you must first take note of its water resistance to make sure that it will still be functional when you’re in the water and as you come out (especially if it’s a smartwatch!)
As such, for your surfing sessions, the recommended water resistance is 10 ATM. Meaning, it can go as deep as 100 meters.
It is also the recommended rating for swimming, snorkeling, sailing, and water sports. A 5 ATM rating, on the other hand, may also be good enough as it is already suitable for everyday use, showering, bathing, shallow-water swimming, snorkeling, water-related work, fishing. You just have to be conscious enough and remember not to go deeper than necessary while wearing your watch.

Integrating Apps

As we mentioned above when talking about the Garmin Instinct Solar, pairing your watch with apps like Surfline Sessions can take the functionality to the next level. Surfing in front of any of Surfline’s network of hundreds of cameras on well-known beaches around the world with a compatible device allows you to record your entire ride, track data and share videos.  Compatible devices on our list include the Garmin Instinct, Apple Watch 6, and the Rip Curl Search 2 GPS.

Tide Functions

You would also want to check the tide functions that the watch presents. Does it only show high or low tide? Or does it also measure tides and show you a graph? Can it also show future tides of the beach you visited or just the present tide? These are only some of the questions that may guide you in checking the watch’s tide functions.

Pre-loaded Beaches

The best surf watches on the market come with pre-loaded beaches; when it comes to this aspect, the more, the better. With just a few pushes of the button, you can easily check out the surfing beaches nearest you. This is especially great if you are the type who prefers to visit beaches in other countries because the pre-loaded beaches are usually located around the globe. With this function, you don’t have to waste time visiting a beach only to realize that it’s not a good surfing spot.

Surf Dial

The surf dial may seem a minor aspect of the watch. However, such is not the case. When you’re under the sun and waiting for your wave, you would want a watch with an easily readable surf dial. One wherein you will still be able to see the data you need even under direct sunlight.
For our Garmin smartwatches above, for example, once you install and access the Garmin Surf Tracker2 app, the dial instantly changes from being a smartwatch into a dedicated surf watch.

Brand

Some would also want to consider the brand and would prefer those that have already established a good reputation in surfing. If you’re particularly looking into this aspect, you’d be glad to know that Rip Curl and Nixon are listed among the best surf brands. In fact, Rip Curl is considered one of the big three in the surf industry along with Billabong and Quiksilver.
Closing Words

As this tech trend continues to develop in the surf industry we continually update this article. Surfers and wave riders have now included surf watches as part of their gear mainly because of the useful information that they can easily access even on water.
We’ve presented the best surf watches for you to choose from. While all of these are useful and durable for your surfing sessions we’ve tried to include enough options so you can pick one that best suits your requirements, style, and budget. Some are still stylish even for everyday wear, others are also useful for other sports activities while there are some that focus on tides and surfing alone.

Longines

Swiss watchmaker Longines has had a long history with equestrian timekeeping—dating as far back as late 1878. It was in 1912 that the brand officially partnered with an international show jumping competition. The brand has been a part of some of the world’s biggest equestrian events, providing accurate time and sponsoring them.
One of the first designs that Longines made was a chronograph that had an engraved motif of a jockey and mount—the brand’s first-ever chronograph movement. In an interview with the brand’s former Longines Vice President Juan-Carlos Capelli, this now-patented movement was the first Longines watch used for precision timing. According to another article, the movement was very accurate that it was used in measuring minutes and seconds by sports judges a few years later.
Capelli added that Longines continues to innovate in sports timing for both the riders and the audience. Continually developing new and informative ways of measuring time, the brand raises the profile of horse racing further by providing more timing information and more splits.

Today, Longines is part of different equestrian sports events: show-jumping, flat racing, endurance and evening competitions. The brand has partnerships with events like the Dubai World Cup, Triple Crown, Kentucky Derby, Prix de Diane Longines, and many more. Rankings are available on the brand’s official website. These are updated regularly and in accordance with the schedule of the competitions.
The long history with equestrian events has also allowed the brand to get creative with its watches. The brand’s Equestrian collection, for instance, is a tribute to the sport and the people behind them. There are the oval stainless steel models such as this one, as well as round options like this one, both of which are dedicated to women who love equestrian sports.

Aside from being a sponsor at the Kentucky Derby (a horse racing event held in Louisville, Kentucky, USA annually), Longines also gives a watch to the event’s winner. According to a Watch Time article, some of these watches that have been given include those from the Longines Master Collection, Longines Conquest Classic Moonphase, and the Longines Conquest 1/100th Horse Racing, a chronograph that was created for riders and fans (the stainless steel watch is called such because it can measure time to a precise 1/100th second).

Another big horse racing partner is Swiss luxury watch brand Rolex, which has been supporting events for over six decades, sponsoring both riders and big events.
One of these events is the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. Introduced in 2013, the event was created by the CHIO Aachen, CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament, and the CHI Geneva (and later on included the Dutch Masters). In this showjumping challenge—with a goal that Rolex describes as “to win the most difficult-to-obtain trophies in the world of equestrian sport,” the rider who wins the Grand Prix at the four shows in direct succession will win.
Check out the official Rolex website for more details about the tournaments. This page will also give you a background on Rolex’s sponsored showjumpers such as Scott Brash, Kent Farrington, Martin Fuchs, Steve Guerdat, Kevin Staut, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Isabell Werth, and many others.
Another is the prestigious equestrian event that Rolex is a big part of is the Royal Windsor Horse Show, the largest outdoor horse show in the United Kingdom. The brand became an official partner in 2016.
There is also the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, where Rolex gives a cash prize to the rider who consecutively wins three big events: Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in Britain, and the Land Rover
Three-Day Event in the United States—“winning all three consecutively represents perfection,” says Rolex on its website. According to this article, the prize money for the event started at $250,000 but was later increased to $350,000.
Rolex has a page on its website called “Every Rolex Tells a Story.” Here, there are short stories about the brand’s sponsored athletes and personalities all over the world, and promotion of its classic timepieces. One of the sponsored riders,  Steve Guerdat, talks about his Rolex Daytona, the watch that he wore when he won the CHI Geneva in 2013.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren Stirrup Large Chronograph Rose Gold

See on Ralph Lauren | See on eBay

Ralph Lauren is not a known sponsor in equestrian events, but the brand has in its collections many different forms of tributes to the sport. Designer Ralph Lauren is known for equestrian-inspired designs in its clothing, accessories, and watches—riding jackets, jewelry, watches with stirrup design, and so on. According to an article by Forbes, the man even owns a horse ranch in Colorado.
The posh equestrian style has been part of the Ralph Lauren collection since the brand’s beginnings. The famous Ralph Lauren Ricky bag, according to this article, for instance, was inspired by a vintage saddle carrier. These early inspirations paved the way for more equestrian-inspired items, such as the brand’s fashion luxury watch line.
One of Ralph Lauren’s most popular equestrian-inspired collections is the elegant Stirrup collection, which, as the name suggests, are models with different features that share a common design: a stirrup-shaped watch case. There’s a small rose gold design (around $13,500), a medium steel black (around $6,500).
One of the most expensive models is the Large Chronograph (around $25,800), which is a polished 18-karat rose gold stirrup-shaped case, a lacquered dial, Roman numeral markers, and sword-shaped hands. This watch (36.6mm x 38.5mm) is equipped with an RL750 caliber and has a power reserve of 48 hours. There are 12-hour and 30-minute counters, as well as a seconds dial.
These are pretty high price tags for a name that’s widely known as a fashion brand so there was a lot of skepticism. When the watches came out, however, many were impressed by the movement and the design. Check out this review by A Blog to Watch, which pointed out that the movement of the Stirrup Chronograph was produced by the respected Jaeger-LeCoultre, changing the game for fashion brands producing watches.
You can check out the rest of the Stirrup collection here.
The brand also released the Miniature Ralph Lauren Stirrup collection, which is proportioned for women or anyone with smaller wrist sizes. The line includes the Mini Rose Gold Stirrup, with a 16.8 mm x 22.5 mm case and a case with a polished 18k rose gold. This watch has a quartz movement (which explains the more relatively affordable price tag of around $7,950 on the brand’s website) and a battery life of up to 63 months. This is part of the stirrup design collection that celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Other horse-Inspired Watches

Many horse-inspired watches also came out in 2014, which was the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar. This article mentions some companies that created watches inspired by the year, such as a silicone watch by Swatch ( which created the Year of the Horse SUOZ169 model).
The luxurious Altiplano Cloisonné Enamel Horse watch by Piaget, which is only limited to 38 pieces and costs a whopping £48,700. There is also the Vacheron Constantin horse models from its Métiers d’Art collection, with each piece only limited to 12 pieces each.

Garmin Approach S62: Premium Pick

Garmin Approach S62, Premium Golf GPS Watch, Built-in Virtual Caddie, Mapping and Full Color Screen, Black (010-02200-00)
Garmin Approach S62, Premium Golf GPS Watch (Image: Amazon)

We start off our list with the technologically impressive Garmin Approach S62.
When it comes to sport-specific smartwatches, Garmin really is ahead of the pack, from swimming to cycling watches,  Garmin has cutting-edge features and golf is no exception.
The features you get and the seamless integration with the companion “Gamin Golf” app put it several strokes ahead of the competition. Combine that will the optional accessories such as the CT10 golf club tracking sensors that automatically track every shot you take – on any club (including putts) and you have a tourney-winning combo of hardware and software.
*** Garmin recently came out with an upgraded S62. If you’re considering buying the S60, click here to see a side-by-side comparison of the S60 and S62 to decide if you think the more advanced playing and training features make it worth upgrading to the newer model.
Moving forward, for your golf game, this watch is already loaded with more than 40,000 preloaded golf courses that you will find around the world. You won’t even have to purchase them! The watch even auto-recognizes the course you’re on once you put it on golf mode.
What’s more, since you can already see and load your course on your watch, the touchscreen of Approach S62 also allows you to move the flagstick at any point on the course. By doing this, you’d also be provided the exact distance to the pin.
The Approach S60 can also track and remember your score. It has an AutoShot game tracking that detects your shots and records your scores for each hole. You can check and compare your strokes in each round. You don’t even have to upload your data to your phone or computer right away because the watch itself comes with 1GB of internal memory. But, if you want to compare scores with your golf buddies, the Garmin Connect phone app will make it a lot easier.
Aside from all its smart and helpful features, the overall look of this GPS golf watch would also make you want to wear it even when off the course. It looks great and sleek and comes with convenient QuickFit bands that are comfortable on your wrist. The screen is also large and bright, making it easy for anyone to read the displays even in direct sunlight.
There is so much more to love about this golf watch we could go but you can also check out the full specifications of the Approach S62 on Garmin.com.

Garmin Approach® S60: Runner-Up

If you’re looking for a premium golf watch but don’t need the latest and greatest you could opt for the Garmin Approach S60. You’ll save about $100 off the S62 (based on Garmin’s pricing as of Feb 2021) and still get a feature-packed watch.

Other Features
But, the new feature on this watch that most customers really loved is its multi-activity tracker. As such, it is not only useful for your golf games but also for running, swimming, biking, even snowboarding, and rowing!
“Will it last for the whole game or activity?”, you might ask. It sure will! Even though it is packed with smart features, the Approach S60 will last for up to 10 hours even when you’re using the GPS, up to 10 days when in smart mode,  and much longer if you’ll use it just as a simple watch. It is packed with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery so you can easily plug it into your computer and any USB-charger.

For Samsung smartphone owners or any Android user wanting to pair a compatible watch with their phone, it’s definitely worth looking at this special Golf Edition Galaxy Active 2 Watch that Samsung has launched. There’s an LTE version for tether-free calls and messaging, an Under Armour Edition which comes with a built-in running coach, and, our favorite, the golf-edition which is perfect for taking out on the course.
The underlying hardware and build of the watch will be identical to the standard Active Watch 2 with the slim design and touch-sensitive bezel for navigating the interface. It comes with a new rubber strap that is more breathable than the standard Galaxy Active 2 strap and more suited to long games on the course.
There’s a new Smart Caddy app that’s only found in the Gold Edition. This has satellite maps and information for over 40,000 golf courses across the USA and other countries, including distances and views of the green.
The app can use the watch’s GPS to show you how far to the green. You can also track your game and progress using the built-in yardage book which also uses GPS to track the distance that you walk between the shots.

If your leaning towards getting a Garmin golf watch but have smaller wrists or just want something more discreet (and more affordable), take a closer look at the slimmer Garmin Approach® X40.
The features of Approach X40 are very much similar to that of Approach S40, except that its display is rectangular and its band is sleeker. It is perfect for those with smaller wrists and/or female golfers. The downside, however, is that its battery is only good for 5 hours when on GPS mode.

Bushnell Neo Ion 2 – Budget GPS Watch

The Bushnell Neo Ion 2 is a Bluetooth-capable GPS golf watch.  Bluetooth connectivity is beneficial especially if you install the Bushnell App on your smartphone. Through this, you can choose from more than 36,000 pre-loaded golf courses located from only 30 countries, which is still less compared to the number of pre-loaded courses in Garmin Approach model but still impressive.
Ion 2 can also measure distances with auto-hole advance, calculate shot distances, has an odometer, and step counter. However, there have been concerns that the GPS connectivity may lose at some points. In such instances, you will have to sync your watch with your phone again to find the course and hole you’re playing.
The Ion 2 battery will last for up to 12 hours without having the need to recharge. Another feature that stands out about this GPS golf watch is the reversible strap. Black may be turned to blue, and silver may be turned to green.

Golf Buddy Aim W10 GPS Watch: User-Friendly

Golf Buddy Aim W10 GPS Watch aim W10 Golf GPS Watch, Black, Medium
Golf Buddy Aim W10 GPS Watch

Primarily, there are two words to describe the Golf Buddy Aim W10 GPS Watch – simple and easy-to-use. It stood on its concept to make the watch simple by not including any online and Bluetooth connectivity, so it is focused on being a GPS golf watch or as a standard watch when off-course.
Making it easy to use is a golf button along the side of the watch face so you can quickly switch to Golf Mode or back to watch mode.
For the Golf Mode, this watch is still equipped with the basic features you need such as the around 40,000 pre-loaded courses in over 170 countries.  Automatic course and hole recognition, Green View display, hazard yardage, shot distance calculator, and an odometer.
Its battery will work up to 11 hours Golf mode before (a 2-hour upgrade from the previous Golf Buddy WT6 model) and up to 60 days when in watch mode only.
GolfBuddy also provides a 1-year limited warranty on this W16 so better make sure that your unit is covered especially considering that there have been a significant number of complaints on some W16 units.
Evidently, the GolfBuddy W16 does not intend to compete with the previous Garmin Approach models. Rather, it is designed mainly for new golfers and marketed as an entry-level GPS golf watch. In such a target market, this one won’t disappoint.

Tag Heuer Connected Modular Golf Edition – Luxury Pick

See full specs on Tag Heuer | Check eBay

Last on the list of best GPS golf watches is one very recently announced by Tag Heuer – the Tag Heuer Connected Modular Golf Edition.
It is mainly designed after the Connected Modular 45, which is one of the most expensive smartwatches you can buy! From its bezel alone, you can instantly see that this smartwatch is dedicated to golfers, which indicates the 18 holes of a typical round. The watch is made of PVD titanium and the strap is made of rubber. There are also green accents along the white strap and watch body.
Alongside the release of this golf watch is the launch of its partner app, the Tag Heuer Golf app. Through this, you can access the watch’s golf features such as the preloaded courses, Green View display, hazard distances, shot distance, and score tracker.
The primary downside of this smartwatch, however, is the price. Because as you might think, it is indeed a luxury golf watch.

Garmin Approach® S40

Another GPS golf watch from the Garmin Approach collection is the Approach® S40. It comes with a 1.2″ color screen with a sunlight-readable display and quick-release bands so you can easily swap its sporty strap with a more formal band.
Its features are similar to that of Approach S60. It comes with the pre-loaded courses, the Green View that allows you to move the pin and score tracker. The Approach S40 is also equipped with “AutoShot Game Tracking” that can project the distance of your stroke and accurately measure distances from hazards.
For better and more automatic game tracking capabilities, you may connect your Approach S40 to the Approach CT10 club tracking sensor. If you want a CT10 together with your Approach S40, you can directly buy a bundle from Garmin here.
Aside from the C10, you may also connect it to your smartphone so you would always be in touch with your messages, emails, calls, and other important notifications. You may also download the Garmin Golf app on your phone for live scoring and real-time leaderboard updates.
Interestingly, its battery life is quite longer than that of Approach S60. When in GPS mode, the S40 can last up to 15 hours (as compared to S60’s 10hours). On smartwatch mode (What does this mean? Read more about smartwatches here.), the battery is good for 10 days without recharging.
See more details about the Garmin Approach S40 here.

Garmin Approach® S20

Another Garmin Approach model that you would love to take to your golf game is the Approach® S20. Unlike the Approach S60 and S40 models that come with a circular display, the S20 showcases a square display although it is still not as sleek as that of X40.
Its features are also mostly similar to that of S60 and S40. It is preloaded with more than 40,000 golf courses (and free course updates), provides the yardage you need about the course, the Green View display to help you through your hole, TruSwing compatibility, and C10 compatibility. (see the Approach S20 & C10 bundle at Garmin.com)
Anyway, what it really boasts of is its battery life of 15 hours (similar to that of Approach S40) when on GPS mode and up to 8 weeks when in using the activity tracking feature.

The last of the Approach models for this review is the Approach® S10. Because of its square display, it looks very similar to Garmin Approach S20.  Its design is a lot simpler, although it’s fashioned after the Apple Watch.
It comes with a 1.3″ sunlight-readable screen. However, at the onset, you must know that it is not a touchscreen. Rather, to navigate it, you will have to use the four buttons located at the sides of the watch face.
Regardless, the Approach S10 is also equipped with features that you’ll appreciate during your golf game – pre-loaded courses, yardages, and score tracker. You can even upload your scorecards to Garmin Express and participate compete with the top players on the leaderboards of the Garmin Golf app.
When in GPS mode, the rechargeable battery can last for 12 hours. Also, the watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters deep (rated 5 ATM).

If the Approach S10 still seems to be too big for you, Garmin has a slimmer version as well – the Approach® X10.
Although slimmer, you might be surprised to know that the X10 is actually designed with a touchscreen display. It is also packed with intelligent golf-related features such as the 41,000 preloaded courses, Green View display, and distance.
You may also use the Garmin Express to find new courses and it updates for free. Its water rating is also 5 ATM, meaning its resistant to water up to 50 meters deep. Its battery, on the other hand, can go for 23 days if used as a standard watch and up to 12 hours when on GPS golf mode.

TomTom Golfer 2

Read Amazon Reviews | See on TomTom

The TomTom Golfer 2 is the improved version of its predecessor, the TomTom Golfer golf watch. It is also equipped with the basic features you’d expect from a GPS golf watch – hazard yardage measurement, auto-shot detector, score tracker, more than 40,000 pre-loaded golf courses, and activity tracker.
However, the auto-shot detector is not very accurate since it detects other movements at times. It also has a Green View function but was found to be not very helpful. Another low point for this golf watch is that it is not a touchscreen.
Nevertheless, it has a battery that can last for 11 hours when using GPS, interchangeable bands with a tri-fold closure system for better hold on your wrist; sleek design; and water resistance up to 40 meters.

What About Garmin TruSwing™ sensors?

**We had recommended getting the TruSwing™ sensor in the past as a great accessory for the Approach watches but as of early 2021, these have been permanently discontinued.
If you’re looking for the ultimate golf combo, the Garmin Approach S60 is compatible with the TruSwing™ sensor that analyzes your swing speed, club path, club head tempo, and even your shaft angle. The sensor easily mounts right on your club just below your grip and sends tons of useful data about your golf swing to your wrist.
You can also see the data on your smartphone or tablet including a 3D rendering of your shot and the ability to compare to past shots with the same club. Although you may buy and use the Approach S60 without this accessory, it’s a great training aid that can help you improve swing and take strokes off your game.
Here is a quick video that shows some of the features of the sensor.
(Please note, the Approach models have all been updated. The video refers to a small number of previous models, but there are currently many Garmin watches and devices that are compatible (see the current list of devices compatible with TruSwing on Garmin.com)
The watch is also compatible with other Bluetooth-ready devices, such as your phone. As such, you can access and read your messages and emails, answer phone calls, and control your song playlist.

One Golf Watch To Avoid:

As you search for an affordable GPS golf watch, you might also encounter the GT1+ Golf Watch from POSMA. Based on its advertised specs, you may think that this watch looks very promising especially considering its price. However, such is not the case. There is a surprisingly high percentage of bad reviews on Amazon, with many buyers stating that this watch disappoints and does not function as you’d expect it to.
Among the most common feedback is that the GT1+ suddenly stops working properly after a month or less. This is due to various reasons – for some, the battery will not charge anymore; others complain that there’s a problem with the memory that can’t be resolved; there are also instances that the watch needs to be connected to PC but the watch will still not sync. There are also reviews that the course information is not accurate.
So, if you want a reliable and accurate GPS golf watch, we recommend you choose one from one of the watches we presented here (or their previous versions). You may also look for other golf watch models from the brands mentioned here, or from other well-known golf brands or watch brands.
Conclusion
Whether you are a beginner just trying to avoid the hazards on the course and figure out how to deal with doglegs or an advanced golfer looking to dial in your shot slightly closer to the pin, you’d find a watch that will suit you and will provide the data that you will need. And hopefully, you’ll be able to improve and develop your golf skills from the first tee to the final green. But these watches are not just about the features. Even when off-course, these watches come in great design and look stylish.

Garmin Forerunner 735XT offers the best value for money with its budget-friendly price tag and an impressive array of features. The 735XT comes in two variants: the stand-alone unit and the tri-bundle that includes a chest strap and the HRM-Swim accessory.
The HRM-Swim variant is designed to be used for swimming and is constructed to be resistant to chemical damage. While the Tri-bundle improves the 735XT, this does not mean that the stand-alone version is lackluster. Far from it. The 735XT is already a solid triathlon sports watch on its own and will be able to provide an excellent and reliable experience in this area, even without the additional accessories.
The watch also comes in with a water-resistant ATM rating of 50 meters, a good number for those who will be using it for swimming. It comes with a variety of modes designed to accommodate you during specific activities such as running, cycling, and swimming. The running mode is excellent for tracking progress, while the cycling mode can monitor distance. The cycling mode is also compatible with the Vector app.
The 735XT is a sleek and lightweight sports and tracking watch that is as well-rounded as they come in this category. There is an issue with its battery life though, as utilizing every available feature can quickly drain the power within hours of use. Other than that, the Garmin Forerunner 735XT is a solid choice for individuals looking for a reliable fitness tracking, and sports watch to accompany them when participating in a triathlon.

Pros:

  • It offers impressive versatility with the Tri-bundle version.
  • It is lightweight and compact.
  • Solid construction.
  • Reliable tracking capabilities.

Cons:

  • Battery life is disappointingly short if you turn on all features simultaneously.

Buyer’s Guide for Triathlon Watches

Taking part in a triathlon is no simple feat. You will need to be physically and mentally prepared before the event. That means months of intense training to ensure your body will be up to the task. Whether you’re racing in a Sprint distance triathlon, Olympic, or the coveted full Ironman, the distances and level of fitness required to complete one of these events are daunting.
Apart from the physical abuse that you’re body goes through while training for one of these races, the damage to your wallet can also be quite painful. Not only do the registration fees for events continue to rise, but the total cost of preparing for a triathlon (running shoes, a quality road bike, nutrition, etc) can also require some smart budgeting.
Faced with all those costs, u

If you are planning on participating in triathlon and want to use triathlon watches, there are several features that it must include. Why leave anything to chance when there is a reliable device that can help you through the event, a device that is exceptionally lightweight and compact and will not hinder your performance but help optimize it? We will be listing essential functions that a triathlon watch must have down below:
Do you use a triathlon watch? | Photo Credit: Pixabay

GPS Navigating System

This feature is one of the key features that any good triathlon watch has. By having a reliable and accurate GPS, you can easily track your current progress and adjust your pace to optimize your energy during the triathlon, helping prevent you from expending too much power at an inopportune moment of the race.

Durability and Water Resistance

Triathlons can be quite a physically taxing event. You will be pushed to your absolute limit as you make your way through challenging terrain. Having a triathlon watch that can withstand such abuse is a no-brainer.
You will need a sturdy watch to conquer such a tough event. Sports watches with bezels, scratch-resistant and anti-glare glass, and high water resistance are all essential characteristics to have.

Battery Life

Triathlons usually take up to 12 hours to complete; as such, you need a triathlon watch that can survive that long on a single charge. Make sure that the sports watch can deliver the maximum amount of battery life even with several features such as GPS tracking is turned on.
Some smartwatches will see a considerable drop in battery life; the more apps are used. Fortunately, this is not the case with all sports smartwatches in the market.

Connectivity with Triathlon Apps

Check for multisport features. If the triathlon watch is compatible with third-party workout apps, then that is a better choice. Triathlon and workout apps are invaluable when it comes to their ability to offer improved convenience during these sorts of events. You can easily pace yourself properly with the right triathlon app by your side. Some of the most common apps include Strava and the Swim.com app.
How much to spend on a good triathlon watch?

triathletes checking watch at start

Many outsiders think that an event that is “just” running, swimming, and biking would be cheap. But anyone that has actually participated in a race knows that gear adds up: ever-increasing cost of registration entry fees, running shoes, and a decent road bike, not to mention travel costs to and from the event and more hidden costs such as nutrition, supplements, personal training, and gym fees.
So with all that in mind, many triathletes hesitate to drop a bunch of cash on a high-end smartwatch. However, given the useful info, you can get from a top watch such as GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, or more advanced features like pulse-ox readings, the value is more evident. However, the price on some of these watches can be prohibitive ($500+ range)and we understand that not all racers are willing to spend that much or may not see the value in having all the latest and greatest features. Because of that, we’ve included everything from the most basic (and reliable) Timex that you can get for around $35 to the top-of-the-line smartwatches from brands including Suunto, Garmin, and Polar.
Conclusion
Triathlon is designed to push the physical body to its limits; having a triathlon watch along with you can help optimize your run and improve your chances of finishing such a challenging event. Hopefully, this list has helped you in choosing the best triathlon watch that suits your needs and is within your budget.

CASIO G Shock Quartz Watch with Resin Strap, Beige, 30 (Model: GG1000-1A5)
Casio G Shock Mudmaster (Model: GG1000-1A5)

Few can deliver that trifecta like Casio’s G-Shock series when it comes to watch toughness, reliability, and affordability. Unfortunately, G-Shock watches are always quite large, and the Mudmaster Twin Sensor is not about to break tradition. This timepiece measures 56.2mm in diameter, which makes it not the best choice for smaller wrists. That said, it piles on the functionalities to make up for the added trunk space.
Like all G-Shock watches, the Mudmaster Twin Sensor comes filled to the brim with features such as the standard countdown timer, alarms, full auto-calendar, 12/24-hour format, and low battery notification. In addition, the Twin Sensor design means that users also get a digital compass and thermometer.
Thanks to its complete resin build, the tank-like case might seem cumbersome, but it is pretty lightweight. Also, aside from having a solid 200-meter water resistance rating, this G-Shock watch is mud-resistant.

Its water resistance to 200 meters makes it suitable for underwater adventures. And making it extra resilient to water are its screw-down crown and a screw-down case back. Its luminescent hands and hour markers help to read the time clearly underwater.
Other features of this Japanese quartz watch include an altimeter, bidirectional rotating compass bezel, and date display at the 3 o’clock position.
Another advantage of this watch is that’s made with Citizen’s solar technology as their eco-friendly approach to reduce the use of batteries that could be toxic to the environment. And to show its stored energy is its power reserve indicator.
It has a rugged construction composed of a black-ion plated bezel on its solid stainless steel case, scratch-resistant mineral crystal dial window that’s also anti-reflective, and a polyurethane strap.

Phoibos Wave Master 300M Automatic Dive Watch (PY010R)

PHOIBOS Wave Master PY010 300M Automatic Dive Watch Black
PHOIBOS Wave Master Automatic Dive Watch

One notable aspect that you will notice with the Phoibos Wave Master watch is its somewhat similar aesthetic to the Tudor watch line. The Phoibos Wave Master comes with a 42mm stainless steel case with a pretty straightforward build. You will also notice that the Wave Master drops the crown guard, which now gives it a sleek and streamlined vibe.
Over at the back of the Wave Master is a beautiful and detailed engraving of its “Octopus” logo along with additional information/specs of the timepiece. Inside the Wave Master’s bulky case is the Seiko Caliber NH35A automatic movement. This particular watch movement from Seiko is highly functional with its 24-jewel structure and a 21,600 VPH. Additionally, the mechanical movement provides a power reserve of up to 41-hours.
The Phoibos Wave Master is as good as they come as a dive watch. It offers an impressive 300-meters or 30ATM water resistance for a sub-$500 watch, a solid scuba diving watch. Even in low-light environments, the bold luminous hour markers and analog hands provide exceptional legibility. Also, the dial’s wave pattern is an excellent visual supplement to the Wave Master’s applause-worthy underwater performance.

Luminox Scott Cassell Deep Dive Edition (XS.1553)

Luminox Mens Wrist Watch Scott Cassell Deep Dive Edition 45mm Black Case Blue Dial (XS.1553): 300 M Water Resistant + Crystal Sapphire + Divers Bezel
Luminox Scott Cassell Deep Dive Edition

Luminox offers some of the most robust timepieces in the market. Generally known for their durable tactical timepieces, Luminox is always an excellent option for looking for highly functional watches. This particular Luminox watch is designed to collaborate with counter-terrorism operative Scott Cassell, so you can bet this is one highly dependable timepiece for all sorts of environments.
As a dive watch, the Luminox Scott Cassell Deep Dive checks all necessary boxes. This rugged timepiece has an ISO 6425 certification, which means it is built for scuba divers and has a 300-meter water resistance rating (30ATM). Thanks to the bold and prominent luminous hour markers and hands, the dial is also quite legible, whether in broad daylight or underwater.
Other notable features incorporated into the Luminox Scott Cassell include a unidirectional rotating bezel, gas tube illumination, and a double security gasket for improved water resistance. As for accuracy, the Luminox Scott Cassell utilizes a Swiss quartz movement for a cost-effective and reliable timekeeping performance.

Invicta Automatic Pro Diver (8926OB)

Invicta Pro Diver Unisex Wrist Watch Stainless Steel Automatic Black Dial - 8926OB
Invicta Pro Diver

The Invicta Pro Diver is one of the bestselling budget dive watches in the market today. Along with a pretty solid 200-meter water resistance, it is also quite affordable compared to other dive watches. The Invicta Automatic Pro Diver features a 40mm stainless steel case and bracelet, giving it a professional charm.
Underneath the robust aesthetic of the Invicta Pro Diver is a high-quality mechanical movement, the Seiko caliber NH35, which offers excellent accuracy. The caliber NH35 is a tried and tested watch movement and is as dependable as you can get. With Seiko’s quality horological know-how, the Invicta Automatic Pro Diver certainly offers something more than most dive watches within its price range.
The Invicta Pro Diver models have a fairly decent reputation as a dive watch. That said, I would recommend primarily using this timepiece for swimming as it might not hold up for more extreme scuba diving expeditions. Overall, the Invicta Pro Diver brings that classic dive watch aesthetic, a pretty decent water resistance, and stylish enough to be used as a dress watch.

Orient Kamasu Blue Dial Automatic Dive Watch (RA-AA0002L)

Orient RA-AA0002L Men's Kamasu Stainless Steel Blue Bezel Blue Dial Automatic Dive Watch
Orient Kamasu Automatic Dive Watch

The Orient Kamasu is another famous timepiece within the divers’ circle. Designed to capture the essence of the barracuda with its sharp and cool aesthetic. You will notice the analog hands having a robust design meant to simulate the fearsome teeth of the barracuda.
The stainless steel case measures at a reasonably robust 41.8mm, and the oyster-style bracelet adds a dash of class and finesse to the overall charm of the Orient Kamasu. The midnight blue dial is akin to the darker depths of the ocean, while the luminous hour indices and analog hands provide excellent contrast for enhanced legibility.
The Orient Kamasu offers a pretty decent balance between performance and price tag in terms of value. Considering that this is a 200-meter water resistance timepiece, it delivers pretty much all the basics regarding being a dive watch.
Additional features that the Orient Kamasu delivers include a day and date display and a unidirectional bezel. Overall, the Orient Kamasu is another worthwhile entry-level dive option that you should check out if budget is a factor.

Buying Dive Watches: What To Look For

Even if you are not a professional diver or never even plan to dive, the iconic look of a divers watch and the ability to fully submerge them in water without damaging them make them some of the most popular watches on the market.
The key feature is, of course, the water resistance. For diving watches, you should look for one that is water-resistant to at least 200 meters (660 feet) or more. Another way to see if it’s good for diving is by checking if its IP Code is usually presented as IPX 8.
You may also see terms like ATM or BAR which are other ways to measure. However, for the sake of this article, you can rest assured that all the watches we’ve reviewed here have a rating of 200 meters or better.
Other necessary features include a screw-down crown and a screw-down case back for a tighter seal; a legible watch dial that’s luminous for clear visibility underwater; and most importantly, the unidirectional rotating bezel that allows a diver to keep track of the time spent underwater.
Diving is an enjoyable activity that also requires caution. So we understand how you can also be careful in choosing the best diver’s watch with the best bang for your buck. That’s why we’ve done some filtering to come up with a list of only the best.
But it really all comes down to your own preference, whether you opt for quartz, automatic, analog, digital, one with a rubber strap, one with a bracelet; or whatever. There are a variety of watches here, so you may find something that’s suitable for you. But rest assured, these watches, indeed, will serve their purpose.
Timing is definitely important when it comes to diving. Take it from the professional diver, Craig Mainprize, himself. So it’s essential to have with you a precise diver’s watch when going underwater.

Music Themed Watches | Find A Finely Tuned Gift Watch For Musicians https://watchranker.com/music-themed-watches/ Wed, 10 Apr 2019 09:47:54 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=2453 Music lovers and watch aficionados have a few things in common. They tend to know everything about their specific obsessions, they will take any opportunity to bring it up in conversation, and they will spend thousands of dollars on their collections, just to name a few similarities. It’s a love they can hardly contain.

For that reason, it’s not surprising that there is a fair amount of crossover between the two groups of enthusiasts. It makes sense, music is all about keeping time. With such an obvious connection between them, it’s fitting that there are numerous watches that have designs inspired by music in some fashion or another. Some watches celebrate specific bands, while others weave musical concepts into their design. For the watch fanatic in your life who also always has his or her headphones at the ready, here are some of the coolest music-inspired watches out there.

Raymond Weil Music-inspired Watches

Raymond Weil Men's 7700-TIR-05207 "Nabucco" Titanium Automatic Watch with Black Rubber Band
Raymond Weil “Nabucco” Titanium Automatic

If we’re talking music and watches, we have to start with Raymond Weil. The highly respected Swiss watchmaker has made music an integral part of its watch designs, sometimes subtly, sometimes explicitly.
For instance, their Nabucco line of watches are analog chronographs that were inspired by the beloved self-tuning SG model of Gibson guitars (check out a Titanium model on Amazon).
The design doesn’t immediately bring to mind music, but just like a Gibson guitar, a Nabucco is a finely crafted instrument (“Nabucco” is also the name of an Italian opera).
Then there is the Maestro line by Raymond Weil. Again, the name nods to classical music and opera, but the musical connection doesn’t end there.
One of the special editions of their Maestro series is the Sinatra, named, of course, for the famous crooner, Frank Sinatra. (Bulova also makes a Sintra watch).
The company has also released three different Beatles-inspired Maestro watches, with the latest being an homage to the Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
If you like your rock music a little harder (and more Australian), seek out one of their limited edition AC/DC watches, in the Freelancer line.

What all these watches have in common, besides for music in their soul, is reliable Swiss-made timekeeping and sophisticated style. Whatever your favorite song or preferred style of music, there is probably a Raymond Weil watch (on either side of the pond) that will speak to you. Or, should I say, sing to you.

ArtyA music watches

One of the more idiosyncratic Swiss watchmakers, ArtyA, pays tribute to music in a variety of ways.
First, there is their Son of Sound Guitar series of watches, a collection of nine wristwatches that resemble different styles of guitars. These watches will definitely be a hit with any guitar heroes (or wannabe heroes) in your life, but don’t expect them to be easy to track down. ArtyA watches tend to be limited edition and sold direct.
Speaking of limited edition ArtyA watches, check out their KISS watches. The band members of KISS were said to be such big fans of the watchmaker, they reached out to company founder, Yvan Arpa. After spending time with the four KISS musicians, Yvan Arpa, created four individualized watches for each of them featuring their famous painted faces. Replicas of the watches were sold for a short time, but they are no longer available.

Band-inspired Watches

Another Swiss watchmaker, Zenith, pays tribute to a legendary rock band (and contemporary of the Beatles), the Rolling Stones. The watch features the Stones’ iconic bright red tongue and lips on the face. This chronograph watch is part of the El Primero line of watches a truly beautiful series of timepieces.
This version is a “skeleton” style, meaning that the inner gears are visible through the face. Like all the El Primero watches, this watch includes two subdials, a tachymeter, and a date display. For fans of one of the greatest bands in history, this is a cool and stylish memento. See the Rolling Stones watch on Amazon.com

Meanwhile, American watchmaker, Nixon, teamed up with American heavy metal rockers, Metallica, for a series of nine watches inspired by the band. Each watch has a design based on one of the band’s many albums, including classics, Master of Puppets and the eponymous “Black Album.”

The watches are available to buy through the band’s online store or through the watchmaker’s own site, with the potential for more collaborations in the future.
See the Metallica Collection on Nixon.com
If your musical taste is a little bit more eclectic, check out Vannen, an LA-based skateboard and watch company. They have an entire line of band-inspired watches for groups and artists as varied as the Descendents, Less Than Jake, Blondie, Bad Religion, and The Vandals (to name a few). Unfortunately, they all appear to be sold out currently, but head over to eBay for used ones. For lovers of less mainstream music, this is a watchmaker to keep an eye on.
If you’re a fan of guitar legends, check out Eric Clapton’s watch collection.

Music-themed watches

Not all music lovers necessarily want a band-inspired watch. For these fans, maybe they’d prefer a watch that celebrates music in a different way. In that case, head over to Zazzle.com to find a whole host of music-themed watches.
Personally, I think their different Circle of Fifths watches are pretty cool (here’s another version). The Circle of Fifths is a major part of music theory and the way it is utilized in the design of these watches will make any music nerd or band geek happy. It’s both a striking design and a very useful watch if you’re headed into Music Theory class.
If that’s a bit too nerdy for you, you can always go with your instrument of choice, like say a trumpet. This quartz analog watch is pretty bare-bones, but that’s okay, it’s all about honoring your favorite brass instrument.

Listen to music on a smartwatch

Huawei Watch 2 Classic Smartwatch – Ceramic Bezel- Black Leather Strap

If you don’t feel a need to project your love of music to the world, maybe go with a smartwatch so you can take your tunes with you.
The Huawei Watch 2 (find it on Amazon) has 4GB of storage so you can upload your music, or sync it with your phone to stream it directly. It’s the best way to make sure you always have your favorite songs with you.
There are a lot of ways that music lovers and watch collectors can combine their two biggest obsessions. How do you show your love for the two?

7 Best Swimming Watches In 2022 https://watchranker.com/best-swimming-watches/ https://watchranker.com/best-swimming-watches/#respond Fri, 08 Mar 2019 12:51:35 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=1926 Growing up in Minnesota, hockey was the go-to winter sport. Like most of my friends, I started young and loved the game. But, my dad was not a fan of the hard-hitting and recurring injuries and was always trying to get me to dive into the pool rather than lace up my skates.
As I got older I realized that swimming was a great sport that would be easy on my joints and keep me in shape but just never could get into it and doing laps just seemed boring.
It wasn’t until I was 40 that I had a total turn around after listening to a podcast episode by Tim Ferris where he talked about this total immersion swimming method by Terry Laughlin.
I tried it and got totally obsessed with swimming. I now go to the swimming pool to do laps 4-5 days a week.
Two pieces of equipment made a huge difference for me, the first was being able to listen to my favorite music using this waterproof case by H20 Audio for my iPod Shuffle (honestly without music I get bored doing laps) and the Garmin Swim 2 watch for tracking my workouts and progress.

Best Watches For Swimming

Before You Buy:
Before you start your search, it helps to think about how you’ll really use the watch. Do you just need a simple, waterproof watch to count laps and or would you the features of an advanced multisport watch?  Do you want a swim-centric device that focuses mainly on your pool workout or a more versatile watch that can track data from different sports (i.e. do you do triathlons or other sports where having a high-end sports watch would be useful?)
A multisport smartwatch usually tracks your swim distance and speed, while the simpler swimming-specific watches can do more  (ie. counting strokes, tracking pace and distance).
Below, we’ll feature both–take a closer look at their features and maybe try them on if you get the chance (this is especially important to those who are very particular about the weight of the device). We’ve also provided some videos of the watches in action.
Here are some of the best swimming watches and trackers that will help you count laps and optimize your workout.

Garmin Swim 2 – Best Overall For Pool & Open Swim

Garmin Swim 2, GPS Swimming Smartwatch for Pool and Open Water, Underwater Heart Rate, Records Distance, Pace, Stroke Count and Type, White
Garmin Swim 2 (Image: Amazon)

Read Amazon Reviews | See on Garmin.com

One of the biggest sports watch brands today, Garmin continues to design exceptional hardware with practical and user-friendly features for athletes and hobbyists alike. While they have many models to choose from, if you’re looking specifically for a watch for swimming, the Garmin Swim (2) is one of your best bets.
*In Oct 2019, Garmin released the new upgraded Garmin Swim 2 (See full specs on the Garmin website) or See on Amazon.
**Please note – If you are researching this watch, or decide to buy it,  be sure to look at the new, improved version “2” not the original as this one was plagued by water leakage and mediocre reviews.
The new version also includes underwater wrist-based, underwater heart rate monitoring, and GPS for open swim modes.
Made with swimmers in mind, this water-resistant (50 meters) watch records the basics: distance, strokes, and pace. It also has features for logging drills and timed sets, and can detect what stroke you are doing. The interface is not complicated–there are a total of six buttons, so every function can be accessed easily with a press of a button.
To review, share, and analyze your workout, you can also upload everything on the Garmin Connect App.
This feature helps you stay motivated, providing details of your training and the distance that you have accomplished during the day or week.
The best part about this is you don’t need to go through any complicated setup after unboxing. You can strap it on and use it right away–all you need to do is input the size of the pool you’re using and you’re good to go.
The simple design will allow you to change the batteries yourself and they should last about a year.

We’ll provide you with two top picks for this article: a smartwatch that is excellent for swimming but can also be used in other sports, and a simpler, more straightforward fitness tracker that is focused on swimming.
For the former, we highly recommend the Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist HR. It is the most expensive item on this list, but it’s also the most versatile. The multisport function is great for swimmers who are also into other sports and fitness activities such as cycling, running, and climbing (there are 80 pre-installed sports modes features).
For the latter, we recommend Swimmo, a swimming-focused device that is perfect for those who focus solely on their pool training. The Rotate&Tap™ Technology is especially useful for swimmers who won’t always have time to start the watch once they’re in the water. The technology of this simple device is promising, and the price tag is extremely affordable, too.

Garmin Forerunner 935 GPS – Multi-Sport Value

Garmin Forerunner 935 Running GPS Unit (Black)
Garmin Forerunner 935 (Image: Amazon)

Read Amazon Reviews | See on Garmin.com

Although the “Garmin Swim 2” above is marketed as the dedicated Garmin watch for swimming and is our top pick for a swim-specific watch. However many athletes actually prefer the newer Forerunner 935 for its versatility.
When it comes to dry land for running and multisport features, the 935 excels. The 935 is rated to 5 ATM (water-resistant up to 165 feet) and has the benefit of being an ABC watch (altimeter, barometer, compass) which is great if you are also using it for outdoor activities, whether that be hiking or open water swimming where knowing your direction is key.
The 935 has built-in sporting data for tracking everything from cycling to cross-country skiing. When it comes to swimming, the watch is compatible with the swim.com app. See the full specs of the Forerunner 935 on Garmin.com
There are some complaints from buyers on Amazon that the 935 does not accurately track pool laps, especially when changing swimming strokes during your workout.
Another complaint is that the wrist base Heart Rate monitor does not work so you would need to purchase on separately such as the Garmin HRM-Tri Heart Rate Monitor or similar HR strap.
On the plus side, some say the Forerunner does better on water resistance than the original Swim model which got a lot of reviewer complaints of leakage – which is surprising considering it was specifically designed for swimmers.

Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar – Premium Multi-Sport Pick

Garmin fenix 6X Pro Solar, Premium Multisport GPS Watch with Solar Charging, Features Mapping, Music, Grade-Adjusted Pace Guidance and Pulse Ox Sensors, Dark Gray with Black Band
Garmin fenix 6X Pro Solar

Unlike the Garmin Swim above that is specifically designed for the sport and our top pick, if you are an all-around athlete or triathlete (and have the budget for it) you may want to consider the top-of-the-line fēnix® 6 – Pro Solar Edition which came out in 2020.
This is an impressive and versatile smartwatch which is why we’ve selected it as the top overall pick on many of our sports-specific watch lists including our list of best watches for triathlons.
The watch is packed with features that make the Fenix line one of the top sports smartwatches on the market. Apart from tracking your workouts, runs, and swims, this watch includes detailed TOPO maps which are great for biking, trail running or any other outdoor activity where detailed maps are a huge benefit. Health and fitness tracking include heart rate and Pulse Ox as well as cutting edge features such as Garmin’s PacePro for pace guidance and VO2 max and training status/recovery estimates that adjust for your environment (i.e. temperature and altitude.
The icing on the cakes is the new Garmin Power Glass solar charging that gives it 14-day battery life. Apart from sports features, it’s a practical all-in-one smartwatch that has contactless payments, music streaming and advanced sleep tracking.
As you can see, this watch is head and shoulders above your average sports watch, however it also comes with a price tag to match. While you might not find it commonly recommended for swimming, we thought we should bring it to your attention if you’re a serious athlete looking to seriously up your wrist game.

For open water swimmers, this video from YouTuber DC rainmakers is a good overview of the functionality and at the end offers a useful comparison of the 935 vs the Fenix 5 (since replaced by the new gen 6).

Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist HR

Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist HR - Black
SUUNTO Spartan Trainer (Image: Amazon)

The Suunto Spartan Collection is an array of multi-sport watches built for different sports and outdoor activities. One of the models in this collection is the Spartan Trainer Wrist HR, a GPS watch that supports a wide array of sports, including running, hiking, cycling, and swimming.
Some of the main features of the Spartan Trainer Wrist include GPS that tracks your speed/distance/pace, a heart rate monitor, an outdoor-grade touch screen, and a battery life of 10 hours in training mode (over 30 hours if you use Power Save), and for swimmers–100 meters of water resistance.
One of the things that makes this watch perfect for those who train in swimming is the lightness and comfort. This is slimmer than the rest of the models, weighing only 56 grams, which is perfect for swimmers.
Its versatility also extends to its design. The watch is undeniably stylish, with a lot of different colors to choose from Gold, Steel, Amber, Sandstone, Ocean, Blue, and the classic Black.
Check out the official Suunto page to explore the different designs.
If you’re doing other sports with your swimming training, this watch will definitely deliver. It has a whopping 80 pre-installed sports modes, so you’re sure that you will be provided with all the training data you will need.

Moov Now – Budget Pick

3D Fitness Tracker & Real Time Audio Coach, Moov Now:Swimming Running Water Resistant Activity Calories Tracker with Sleep Monitor, Bluetooth Smart Wristband for Android and iOS, Stealth Black
Moov Now Fitness Tracker (Image: Amazon)

Moov Now™  fitness tracker is one of the most creative items on this list because of its audio guidance as you do your exercise–an AI that does what a human coach can do and more.
This unique product has a “personal fitness coach” feature, which guides you throughout your workout. It covers a wide array of exercises, which include running, swimming, cycling, HIIT, and boxing.
This changes the way that we exercise–the AI “coach” feature is a great thing to have, especially if you do not have a trainer.
While you wear the Moov band, your virtual coach will let you in on some of the essentials, like the calories you’ve burned, your impact, your heart rate analysis. You will be able to view your progress and other materials for analysis using the Moov app, which tracks all of your exercise activities and gives you suggestions on how to improve your training.
If you’re taking it swimming, it will count your laps and record your time, as well as track your pace, distance, and strokes. You will also be able to improve your endurance–the AI will give you the information on your longest swim and push you to beat it. At the same time, you can also review the time you’re NOT swimming–you can go over your rests and see if they improve your endurance or set you back.
One of the most evident downsides of this item is that it’s not actually a watch. While it can tell the time in audio, you will most probably not wear it if you’re not working out. The battery, which is replaceable, lasts up to six months. If you’d like to have your heart rate monitored and recorded, the Moov HR Sweat is something that you can consider getting. See on Moov.com

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro – Budget Waterproof Tracker

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro Smart Fitness Band (Large), Diamond Red, SM-R365NZRAXAR – US Version with Warranty
Samsung Gear Fit2 (Image: Amazon)

Samsung’s smart fitness band Gear Fit2 Pro is water-resistant up to 50 meters, making it excellent for swimming.
The app is integrated with the Speedo On App, which tracks your activity and provides you with a summary and review of your swim.
Samsung uses a number of sports and fitness apps for optimal performance. These include UA Record, a health and fitness app by Under Armor that helps you track your fitness activity and help you set goals; and Spotify, which you can use even if you don’t have your phone with you, thanks to the WiFi feature and an Offline Mode.
What sets this apart from most devices on this list is its ability to be used in open water. Just see to it that you rinse it in fresh water and dry thoroughly after use, and you’re all set to do another workout.
This multi-function watch is perfect for people who constantly need to be on their phones. The Bluetooth feature allows you to answer calls and texts even if you don’t have the actual phone with you. This model is available in two colors (black, red, and black), and is compatible with both iOs (7) and Android. See full details on Samsung.com.

Fitbit Versa

Fitbit Versa SmartWatch (Image: Amazon)

One of the most popular fitness smartwatches today, Fitbit continues to improve its products with new accessories and better analysis.
The new Fitbit Versa is excellent for tracking laps and–it’s water-resistant up to 50 meters, and it can also count the calories you’ve burned during a workout.
Aside from tracking swim activity, the Fitbit Versa has dozens of other features that you can use for your workout. There are more than 15 exercise modes, all of which will help you monitor, record, and analyze your fitness activities. You can also integrate your favorite apps (including social media) and store hundreds of songs via Pandora or Deezer. The battery can last for up to four days.
One of the most unique features of this watch is its design versatility. Because Fitbit has a wide array of accessories, you can do some customization. For instance, there are different types of straps and bands (leather, steel links), wireless headphones, and scale. The brand recently collaborated with the Council of Fashion Designers of America–the brand PH5–for knitted bands.
The price tag is evidently one of the main concerns that one might have. The Fitbit Versa is not cheap–it’s one of the more expensive watches on this list. If you, however, would like a watch that can be customized with different accessories, can handle a wide array of sports and workouts, and can serve as an extension of your smartphone, then this could be a good investment.

Best Sailing Watches in 2022 (From Budget to Luxury) https://watchranker.com/best-nautical-sailing-watches/ Thu, 24 Jan 2019 15:35:49 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=2025 Sailing watches were originally only made by the best luxury watchmakers.  The Rolex Yacht-Master, for example, is one of the most iconic yachting watches ever sold. Or take the Swiss luxury brand Breguet which has specialized in nautical watches for over 200 years making chronometers for the French Royal Navy. For example, the Breguet Marine Équation Marchante 5887 currently priced at $215,000!
While those watches are wonderful to admire, they are beyond expensive. On this list, we want to provide watches that are reasonably priced and packed with features that are useful for sailing.
A good place to start is the countdown timer, one of the useful features to look for in a sailing watch. A skipper needs to measure the interval that leads to the start of the race/regatta, which can be extremely challenging due to the wind conditions and current.  Ideally, you want a countdown timer that automatically converts to a racing chronograph when it hits zero, like the one on the Tissot Sailing Touch Watch
2022 Update: If you’re looking for the ultimate full-featured boating smartwatch, look at the new Garmin Quatix® 6X Solar, part of the brand’s new solar-powered smartwatch line that adds potentially unlimited battery power and more marine-specific features to the previous Quatix models that were already highly-regarded in the sailing community.
This article will feature both old and new brands and will cover the best sailing watches – from affordable to luxury options.

Garmin Quatix 6 Multisport – Premium Sailing Smartwatch

Garmin Quatix 6 Titanium

Read Amazon Reviews | See on Garmin

With this model in the line-up, Garmin has built upon the solid performance and features of the Quatix 5 mentioned above and added a solar-powered battery along with new features, some of which are unique on the market.
As we reported in mid-2020, Garmin launched its solar watch line, which included an upgraded version of the Instinct, Fenix, Tactix, and the Quantix. The most important new feature is the solar-powered battery, which offers up to 21 days of power out of the box. You can increase that by tweaking the settings (i.e., reducing your GPS usage) by using multiple modes.  The UltraTrac™ battery saver mode will give you 60 hours of GPS, and Expedition GPS Activity mode will provide you with a very impressive 46 days (plus ten days with solar charging). While most users won’t need this type of battery duration, it could be a valuable safety tool if you are doing long sailing trips or in a situation where you need to rely solely on your wearable for GPS.
As far as sailing goes, the 6 includes Garmin SailAssist™ with an improved sail racing profile that includes distance to start line, virtual starting line, tack assist, and race countdown timer.  Tide data can easily be downloaded and synced to your smartphone, anchor alarm and boat data streaming are all included.
When it comes to health and fitness tracking, the Quatix 6 introduces a plethora of features, including- abnormal heart rate alerts, respiration rate, and Blood Oxygen (Pulse Ox), as well as stress and relaxation reminders.
For everyday use, the new model includes the ability to play music with onboard storage for up to 2,000 songs, as well as Garmin pay.
For athletes looking for a full-featured sports watch, the Quantix 6 has tracking for almost everything you can think of – from yoga to standup paddleboarding, and the new underwater wrist-based heart rate tracker is great for water sports.
It probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise that all of these features come at a cost as this new model is priced well above the previous generation.

Tissot “Sailing Touch” Watch – Swiss-Made

Tissot Sailing-Touch Mens Rubber Strap Multi-Function Watch T056.420.27.051.01
Tissot Men’s ‘Sailing Touch’ (Image: Amazon)

One of the essential features of the Tissot Sailing Touch is a countdown function, which turns into a racing chronograph once it reaches zero. The watch also has a compass, barometer, and a tide feature (informs you of the time of high tides and low tides, and if they are coming in or going out).
This watch can assist you when competing in regattas, as it has a regatta timer that will let you position yourself on the starting line.
Other design highlights include luminous markers and hands, a sapphire crystal interface, a backlight, and two time zones. The time is analog, which can also be displayed on the LCD, and it also has a perpetual calendar. You can choose from several bezel colors too (red, blue, and silver). See the different Sailing Touch models here.
Timex Intelligent Quartz Yacht Racer Watch – Value Pick
Timex Intelligent Quartz TW2P44500 Mens Yacht Racer Yellow Chrono Watch
Timex Quartz Yacht Racer

The analog Timex Intelligent Quartz Yacht Racer boasts of a pre-programmed date feature that only needs to be set once—you don’t need to adjust it for decades after that. This one was built especially for the sport, timing the race from start to finish.
This watch is water-resistant up to 330 ft, so you can also use it for swimming and snorkeling, and the newer models also have the Indiglo feature.
One of the things that several users have pointed out is the size of the watch. It’s 46 millimeters in diameter and is 14 millimeters thick, so users with bigger wrists usually prefer it. The price tag is reasonable, making it an excellent entry-level watch for a first regatta.

Casio Tide Watch (WS-1100H-4AVCF)

Casio Men's 10 Year Battery Quartz Resin Strap, Orange, 22.8 Casual Watch (Model: WS-1100H-4AVCF)
Casio Tide Watch

For those looking for a reliable and budget-friendly sailing watch, the Casio Tide Watch should be on your radar. This digital timepiece from Casio comes with a 100-meter water resistance which means you can use it for swimming, but don’t bring it for scuba diving.
The Casio Tide Watch also comes with both a tide graph and moon phase to help you navigate the waters better. As for the design, this watch focuses more on lightweight comfort with its 43mm resin case and silicone straps.
One notable aspect about the Casio Tide Graph is its remarkable 10-year battery life, which enhances its overall reliability by a wide margin. Other notable features include an LED light to give wearers optimum visibility at night, the standard alarm, stopwatch, full-auto calendar, and countdown timer.
All in all, the Casio Tide Watch is a cost-effective sailing and fishing watch for those who want something reliable and affordable to accompany them in their hobby.

Optimum Time Sailing Watch: Simple Budget Pick

Optimum Time Series 3 Sailing Watch - BLUE 314 - NEW COLOUR
Optimum Time Series 3 Sailing Watch

If you are looking for an affordable yet functional sailing watch, the Optimum Time Series Sailing Watch is one of your best bets.
This watch has a silicone strap (personalized with different highlight colors), a stainless steel buckle, and a large display. You have the option to use its three-row display for easy viewing of the time and the timer at the same time.
The shock resistance OS Series 1231R has new and improved features like a clearer display/contrast and high contrast dot matrix display. Its USB-powered charging is convenient too. This one has a more casual, laid-back design and is water-resistant up to 5ATM. It also has the Sync Button, which allows you to get back to the race if you miss the gun. It’s not the most durable watch on the market, but it is priced as a budget watch.

If you’re looking for a watch with multisport functions, this should be at the top of your list. Garmin is a trusted brand when it comes to smartwatches for sports, so you’re sure that you’ll have some of today’s best technology.
The Garmin Quatix 5 is built on the powerful Fenix 5 platform, a smartwatch designed for use in the water. This is a good option if you want a more affordable version of the Quantix since the price has dropped since the release of the newers version 6.
There really are too many features to name here. If you want a closer look at what’s changed to see which is a better fit – check out this comparison of the Quatix 5 and 6 on Garmin.
This powerful GPS marine smartwatch has a heart rate monitor (it’s wrist-based, so you don’t need to use a chest strap). Aside from the boat features, this model also has functions for a wide array of sports (i.e. running, hiking, biking, swimming, etc.)
Garmin has dozens of models for different sports and fitness activities, but the reason why the Quantix model made our list is that it has Garmin SailAssist™ Capabilities that allow the user to have a virtual starting line. There is also a tack assist and a race countdown timer.
This one is excellent on water, but it’s equally efficient on dry land too. Its simple design is also perfect for daily wear.

SUUNTO Core – All around value

SUUNTO Core, All Black
SUUNTO Core

While the SUUNTO Core is a modern smartwatch at its core, no pun intended, its exterior build is a rugged tactical watch.
If you’d like a brand new Suunto for sailing, this multi-sport watch is compatible with sailing activity through the Suunto app and also has useful features including the Storm Alarm, Sea level pressure graph and Weather Trend Indicator.
The exterior of the SUUNTO Core focuses on durability while keeping the timepiece lightweight and comfortable. This goal was achieved by incorporating composite material with aluminum bezels which provide the SUUNTO Core with solid shock-absorbing. The Core also utilizes US Army standard textile strap for that added toughness.
When it comes to timekeeping, the Core is as reliable as a timepiece can be, and it also comes with standard alarms, a countdown timer, and stopwatch functionalities. This is also feature-rich smartwatch designed to make outdoor activities more convenient for the wearer.
The Core has a barometer and altimeter with an altitude log for added accessibility. Along with the two features stated previously is a built-in compass with adjustable declination, making it a good ABC watch.  The compass used in the SUUNTO Core also allows you to keep track of your route. Therefore, it is beneficial if you want a general reference of your current location and trajectory.
Additionally, this smartwatch can also be used for diving as it can indicate your current depth for up to 30-feet. A built-in thermometer can also provide readings from -5F to 140F (-20C to 40C). All in all, the SUUNTO Core is an excellent outdoor smartwatch with fantastic waterproof capabilities and an easy-to-use UI. The only downside we found in the Core is its display which suffers from glare in high-contrast environments.

The brand’s sailor-specific watch, the Suunto Elementum Ventus, was one of our top picks in the past but this one is not made anymore, but you may still find second-hand models on the market today.
Occasionally one will pop up on eBay.
The Suunto Elementum Ventus is a smartwatch with a sleek and sophisticated design, sapphire crystal glass, stainless steel case, and leather strap. The sailing features include a sailing timer, chronograph, compass, and weather predictions.

Garmin MARQ Captain (010-02006-06)

Garmin MARQ Captain, Men's Luxury Tool Watch with Advanced Nautical Features, Track Wind Speed, Direction, Temperature and Tide Information
Garmin MARQ Captain

Read Reviews | See on Garmin.com

The Garmin MARQ Captain is an impressive luxury smartwatch filled to the brim with fantastic features for various activities. Along with Garmin’s staple features such as GPS, activity tracker, smart notifications, and Garmin Pay support – the MARQ Captain also provides Driver, Aviator, Expedition, Athlete, and Captain modes. This smartwatch is undoubtedly a masterclass in what these devices can achieve.
Design-wise the Garmin MARQ is more oversized than your typical smartwatch. However, this bulkier appearance makes sense considering the MARQ’s build quality and feature-packed design. Also, despite the larger build of the Garmin MARQ, it is surprisingly lighter than you would think, at only 94 grams.
In terms of features, the Garmin MARQ offers similar functionalities to the Garmin Fenix 6, and I would even dare say that the MARQ is simply a flashier version of the Fenix 6. However, one of the most notable features in the Garmin MARQ is undoubtedly the Athlete mode. This feature comes with layers of functionality that cover a vast selection of sports such as running, swimming, cycling, skiing, and golf.
Besides the variety of sports features, MARQ also offers nifty functions such as a heart-rate sensor, stress tracking, and incident detection that sends notifications to your emergency contacts about your location. I also want to highlight the Recovery feature, which helps you keep track of your rest which can significantly help if you are nursing an injury.
For sailing, I have to say that Garmin MARQ provides an unbeatable collection of features for sailors. The MARQ comes with a Regatta feature that helps you formulate the optimum route. The Tack feature also gives you real-time updates on wind shifts. In addition, the Garmin MARQ comes with a Man Overboard function that enables you to track a person who accidentally fell off the boat, which is one of its unique features.
Garmin MARQ is undoubtedly one of the top options available in the market as a sailing watch. The Garmin Fenix 6 is a solid sailing watch, but the MARQ Captain is undoubtedly the more stylish of the two.

Ronstan ClearStart Sailing Watch – Budget

Ronstan ClearStart 40mm Sailing Watch- Blue [RF4054B]
Another budget-friendly option for sailors is the Ronstan ClearStart Sailing Watch.
With a decent 5ATM (50-meters) water resistance rating, this digital timepiece should be able to handle a splash or two. It also comes with a World Sailing option, precisely, for boat racing.
Aesthetically, the Ronstan ClearStart Sailing Watch has a pretty standard digital watch design. Simple and direct to the point is what this digital timepiece offers when it comes to appearance. However, it is in its functionality that it genuinely succeeds.
With multiple features on hand, the Ronstan ClearStart Sailing Watch is a fantastic sports timepiece with an affordable price tag. The watch offers a dual display that simultaneously shows real-time and countdown timers. Thanks to the large LCD and its 50mm resin case, the Ronstan ClearStart Sailing has more than enough space to display all necessary information.
The accurate start timer, large LCD, user-friendly UI, and sailing-specific features make this timepiece an excellent choice for sailors at a very affordable price.

Now that we’ve got the more affordable models covered, it’s time to focus on the luxury brands. While most of the watches above are quite affordable, sailing watches were traditionally only made by luxury brands including Aquastar, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Omega, and Rolex,  all known for watchmaking expertise, precision, and hefty price tags.

Corum Admiral AC One 45 Tides

Corum Admiral's Cup Ac-One 45 Tides 277.101.04/F373 AB12 45mm Automatic Titanium Case Blue Rubber Anti-Reflective Sapphire Men's Watch
Corum Admiral’s Cup (Amazon)

This brand also has a rich history. Swiss brand Corum has been around since the 1950s. It’s a prolific company, regularly producing new, limited-edition models. One of its most popular releases is the Admiral’s Cup line of watches, which started production in the 1960s.
The Admiral AC One 45 Tides, the updated model. has gone through several updates but stays true to its original design.
Its CO 277 caliber movement was meticulously developed for years with the Astronomic Observatory of Geneva and the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Services of the French National Navy. This CO 277 caliber is a unique movement specialized for tide indicators, setting this watch model apart from the competition.
This one has a distinct 45mm dodecagonal titanium case, a brushed titanium bezel, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal case, and a vulcanized rubber strap.
What makes this model unique is the tides indicator: tide time and strength, lunar cycle, and strength of the currents/ height of the tides.

Rolex Yacht-Master II ( Image: Amazon)

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, a regatta watch, is one of the most popular luxury yacht watches out there.
The brand boasts of being “the only chronograph in the world with a mechanical memory,” a watch for water sports and sailing.
The TheYacht-Master caliber 4161, is a “self-winding mechanical chronograph movement” developed by the company. The first-ever model of this Rolex was released in 2010. The movement, which comprises 360 parts, took approximately 35,000 hours to create.

Users can program the countdown for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes that returns to its previous setting at reset.

Ulysse Nardin Marine Regatta

Ulysse Nardin Marine Regatta (Image: Amazon)

Another famous name in luxury regatta watches the Swiss Ulysse Nardin Marine watch. This regatta chronograph has meticulously designed kinematics to ensure extremely precise.
One of the highlights of this Ulysse Nardin watch is how the chronograph starts. In most watches, the sailor activates the countdown, stops the countdown at the start of the crossing line, and then starts the chronograph.
The UN Marine Regatta is designed to automatically switch from countdown to chronograph at the start at the end of the countdown. The company also assures an extended five-year warranty (which started in 2017) for anyone who buys a brand-new model.
Ulysse Nardin has been making precision marine chronometers since 1846, pioneering innovative products that continue to stay relevant today.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta

Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Day Chrono Flyback Regatta Black Dial Mens Watch PAM00526
Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta (Amazon.com)

Panerai has an interesting history. It is an old brand that entered the civilian market in the 90s, but prior to this, it created dive watches for the Royal Italian Navy’s underwater missions during World War II.
This history and its precision, utilitarian features, and beauty have gained the brand passionate fans and collectors to this day.
Made especially for sailing, this classic dive watch has a professional regatta countdown.
The Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta features a  47mm brushed titanium case with a rubber bracelet. The bezel is polished titanium. The dial is black with luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers.

Bremont Regatta AC

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BDRRISat_Ld/ hidecaption=true width=320]
The Bremont Regatta AC (America’s Cup) is a limited edition model (the company only produced 235 pieces) and is no longer in production.
However, you can still try your luck searching for sellers on eBay.
It was priced at around $6,800 when it was still available, this is relatively more affordable than the two luxury brands above. This series and a partnership with Oracle Team USA (OTUSA) were released in Baselworld 2016 with much acclaim. A Blog to Watch quoted Oracle Team USA Skipper Jimmy Spithill as saying (about both AC and OTUSA):

“Naturally, we have a central digital clock on the boat but every sailor still likes to have the time on his wrist, and before a race the countdown to the start is critical. It’s a really tough sport both mentally and physically, and not only does the team need to make decisions under immense pressure but we need to have equipment that allows us to do so,” Spithill said. “With the countdown function being so crucial when racing out on the water, we are really delighted that Bremont has invested in this for us and it’s incredibly special for me that the watches also incorporate some of our winning AC72 which I skippered in 2013.”

Some of the main features of the AC include a titanium case material, automatic movement, sapphire glass, and a rubber bracelet. This chronograph timepiece’s sleek, classic design exudes elegance without being flashy.

TNG Classic Tornado Sailing Chronograph

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BawT_EdnDPX/ hidecaption=true width=320]
This is one of the relatively newer brands on this list, but you can count on the company to produce a competitive product. One of TNG’s founders is Olympic sailor Herbert Dercksen, who has won multiple times at the World Tornado Championships. Co-founder Frans Dingerdis is also a sailor and marketing specialist.
The TNG (Tack & Gybe) Classic Tornado Sailing Chronograph has a full automatic sailing time that’s ready for a five and ten-minute countdown. This Swiss-made model has a simple, classic look that will look good in the water and for daily use.  Click to search eBay for this watch.
Other features of this Swiss-made/Dutch-designed chronograph are sapphire scratch-resistant crystal, a power reserve of 42 hours, automatic winding, 28.800 vibrations per hour, and superluminous indexes/hands. The design is a sapphire scratch-resistant crystal, a stainless steel case, and a screw-in crown and case back.

Sailing watches are not cheap, but considering the time and workmanship that goes into every device, they deserve the investment.
Good luck with your search, whether you’re looking for a watch for your first regatta or looking for a more high-end watch to add to your collection.

9 Best Hiking Watches 2021 https://watchranker.com/best-hiking-watches/ Tue, 08 Jan 2019 10:30:56 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=1789 There are few activities more rewarding and rejuvenating than a hike. Getting far away from busy cities and crowded neighborhoods for a little peace within nature is one of my favorite escapes. It’s even better when I can get somewhere that phone signals don’t reach and I can leave almost all my technology behind, everything except for my watch!
When I’m hiking, my watch is an invaluable tool, offering me information on my location and the shifting meteorological patterns. The great thing about a hiking watch is, while they include advanced features from topographical maps, to weather and many don’t require internet connectivity. That means I can actually disconnect for a few hours on my hikes.
The number of quality hiking watches on the market has grown in recent years and the buying decision can be daunting to a first-time buyer. The most recent models have so many new features it can be hard to decide.  For this list of top hiking watches, we’ve included everything from full-featured GPS solar-powered smartwatches to more budget-friendly rugged watches.

Best Hiking Watches

Garmin, Casio, and Suunto are all well-established watchmakers in their own right, though, of course, Casio is by far the brand with the most name recognition worldwide. What each of these brands has in common is that they all know sports watches. A watch for a sports or hiking aficionado needs to be durable, comfortable, and functional.
Keep reading as we look at each company and three of their best-hiking watches, plus one watch by a lesser-known company that is deservedly getting some attention. Any one of these 10 watches would be a great companion on your next hike.
We’ll start with one of the most impressive brands, Garmin.

Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar – Top Pick

Garmin fenix 6X Pro Solar, Premium Multisport GPS Watch with Solar Charging, Features Mapping, Music, Grade-Adjusted Pace Guidance and Pulse Ox Sensors, Dark Gray with Black Band
Garmin fenix 6X Pro Solar

Garmin is a market leader when it comes to multi-functional smartwatches and the “Fenix” line of watches has been our go-to hiking watch for years.
In 2020 Garmin upped the ante with their new Solar-powered line of watches, including the more recent reiteration of the Fenix, the new Fenix 6X Pro Solar.
The premium Multisport GPS Watch comes equipped with solar-powered technology.  Depending on the battery mode and ambient light can give you up to 80 days of power reserve making it a perfect companion outdoors.
Battery life on long hikes can be a deal-breaker so this is really where the new Garmin line excels but when it comes to features the Fenix 6X Pro Solar will be able to deliver in spades.
Preloaded topographical maps and trails, total ascent/descent and vertical speed are just a few of the features that make this a great companion for any serious hiker or trail runner.  The navigational system used here also comes with a barometer, altimeter, gyroscope, and 3-axis compass and its GPS that utilizes GLONASS, Galileo, and GPS satellites.
Additional features also improve overall convenience, such as the Garmin Pay support, allowing users to utilize contactless payment. The Fenix 6X also hits the mark regarding its multimedia features as it is compatible with popular music streaming services.
If you find the Fenix 6X Pro’s price too steep, we recommend checking out the previous model that we had recommended as our top pick until recently, the Fenix 5X Plus. The Fenix 5X comes with base similar features but with less memory and a bulkier build and lacks the solar battery.

Casio G-Shock GW9400-1

Casio Men's GW-9400-1CR Master of G Stainless Steel Solar Watch
Casio Men’s GW-9400-1CR

The G-Shock line launched in the 80s, and while they came out of the gate in impressive fashion, the line hasn’t been resting on their laurels. Recently, G-Shock released the Master Of G Series, a line of watches designed specifically with the various branches of the military in mind. These watches combine typical G-Shock durability with great tech for anyone out in the elements.
One of the best examples is the Rangeman GW-9400 Solar Watch. This particular watch is part of the “land” military-style watches (along with the Mudmaster line). While it isn’t technically billed as a “sports” watch, the GW-9400 would be a valuable accessory on any hike.
This is an atomic watch, which means it uses radio signals to calibrate the time by atomic clocks, making this the most accurate watch you will ever own. On top of that, the watch uses a solar-powered battery that doesn’t need to be recharged for seven months and will last the lifetime of the watch. Considering that this watch uses G-Shock’s proprietary “floating module” and other shock-resistance technologies makes this a long-lasting watch.
For the hiker, the functions that will be most exciting are the altimeter, digital compass, barometer, and thermometer. Other useful features include a stopwatch and a case that’s mud-resistant as well as water-resistant up to 200 meters. It can display the time for 31 different time zones and has sunrise/sunset data. It’s a watch designed for the toughest terrains, so it will have no trouble keeping up with your hiking routine.
This is a great digital watch, but what hikers will miss most is the GPS. There aren’t any maps or ways to indicate exactly where you are. That might not be a big factor if you’re someone who mostly stays to familiar trails, but it could be sorely lacking for anyone that likes to explore. Read more about the on GW9400-1 Casio.com

Casio Men’s Pathfinder Triple Sensor

Casio Men's Pro Trek Stainless Steel Quartz Watch with Resin Strap, Black, 18 (Model: PAG240-1CR)
Casio Men’s Pro Trek (Model: PAG240-1CR)

If the Rangeman line is a little too intense for your tastes, Casio offers much of the same features in their non-G-Shock timepiece, the Pathfinder Triple Sensor Multi-Function Sports Watch (read reviews on Amazon).
Like the GW-9400, this is a solar-powered watch that can go months without a charge. It also has a power-saving setting to help prolong the battery as long as possible.
It includes many of the same hiker-friendly features as the GW-9400, including an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, and digital compass. It’s water-resistant up to 100 meters (instead of 200), so, again, it could be worn in a swim but shouldn’t be taken for any deep dives.
Other familiar features include world clocks, a stopwatch, daily alarms, and a calendar. It’s a stainless steel watch with a resin band, so the Pathfinder is considerably tough, albeit not as durable as a G-Shock. For most hikes and outdoor activities, though, this watch will be plenty strong to handle what you’ll be throwing at it.
Once again, the biggest drawback to the Pathfinder is its lack of GPS and map functions. Of course, these Casio watches also tend to retail for considerably less than the Garmin, so you’re getting what you pay for. In the case of the Pathfinder, that’s a strong, well-equipped solar watch. Read more about the on PAG240-1 Casio.com

Suunto Spartan Sports Wrist HR

SUUNTO Spartan Sport (Wrist - Hr), Black
SUUNTO Spartan Sport

One watch that definitely gives Garmin’s Fenix line a run for its money is the Suunto Spartan Sports Wrist HR (check its availability on Amazon). This GPS-enabled smartwatch has a touchscreen, is water-resistant up to 100 meters, and uses a battery that will last up to 12 hours in “training mode” (i.e., while using GPS trackers).
More than just a hiking watch, this is an all-around sports watch that has different trackers for running, swimming, and cycling. First and foremost, it tracks heart rate, steps taken, calorie consumption, pace, distance, altitude, and speed on land and in water. This is a watch for serious sports enthusiasts who are looking to improve their performance and better understand how their bodies are behaving, even while sleeping.
Other features include route maps guided by GPS, a digital compass, sunrise/sunset data, and Bluetooth. The touchscreen functionality is the main feature that sets this windswept, black watch apart from the Garmin Fenix 5. It’s a very durable watch, with scratch-resistant crystal for the face and a stainless steel bezel. It doesn’t quite achieve the G-Shock level of durability, but for your typical active needs, the Suunto Spartan will be more than strong enough. See full specs of this watch on Suunto’s website.

Polar Grit X GPS Watch

POLAR Grit X - Rugged Outdoor Watch with GPS, Compass, Altimeter and Military-Level Durability for Hiking, Trail Running, Mountain Biking and Other Sports - Ultra-Long Battery Life, Black, M/L
POLAR Grit X – Rugged Outdoor Watch

This modern watch is designed to tackle the great outdoors. The overall durable build and multi-functional of the Polar Grit X also meet the U.S. military standard 810G proving highly resistant to impacts, temperature drops, and moisture.
When it comes to features it includes an altimeter, barometer, and compass along with a built-in GPS with 100-hour battery life!
The Polar Grit X also automatically detects elevations, allowing you to track data such as speed, distance, and altitude during your hikes.
Additionally, this watch also features a weather forecast making it handy for those who love camping for multiple days or planning longer through hikes.  The Grit X comes with Polar’s new “Hill Splitter” features that automatically counts your hill repeats as well as turn-by-turn route instructions when paired with Komoot.

Casio PRG-300 Pro Trek

Casio Men's PRG-300-1A2CR Pro Trek Triple-Sensor Tough Solar Black Digital Watch
Casio Pro Trek PRG-300-1A2CR

From the Pathfinder, we travel over to Casio’s Pro Trek line of watches, specifically the Men’s PRG-300-1A2CR Pro-Trek.
This watch doesn’t set itself apart from the Pathfinder in any major way, and that’s kind of the point. Casio does a certain kind of sports watch very well, and they offer it in a variety of styles and looks.
This solar-powered, digital watch essentially mirrors the Pathfinder in hiking features (altimeter, barometer, thermometer, and digital compass) and other general accouterments (stopwatch and countdown timer). It’s also water-resistant up to 100 meters and has an incredibly long-lasting battery.
There’s nothing in this watch that really sets it apart from the Pathfinder, and it doesn’t have all the functionality of the GW-9400. It also doesn’t have GPS. Yet, for those admitted shortcomings, this is still a great watch that you can pick up for less than $300 and that won’t let you down when you’re on the trails.
There is a more rugged Pro Trek model that made our list of best titanium watches that you may also want to consider.
Casio has been putting out these types of reliable, durable watches for so long that it’s just kind of assumed that their timepieces will do the job. They’re not always the prettiest of watches (I prefer the sleeker design of the Garmin watches), but they definitely have a distinct design. Read more about the on PRG300-1A2 Casio.com

Suunto 9 Baro

Suunto 9 Baro Durable Multisport GPS Watch with Barometric Altitude and Wearable4U Power Pack Bundle (Black)
Suunto 9 Baro

For a slightly stronger watch with a longer training mode battery life (up to 25 hours), check out the Suunto 9 Baro. It retails for slightly more than the Spartan (see price on Amazon), which places it at the higher end of the Suunto line. For that extra green, you get a highly accurate fitness and activity tracker.
This GPS watch has an altimeter and barometer with a storm tracker and air pressure alert. Like the Spartan, this is a multi-sport smartwatch with a touchscreen that can operate in multiple modes, depending on which activity you’re doing. The Baro is equipped with the most advanced and accurate tracking software that Suunto has to offer.
Furthermore, the Baro is specifically designed to be extra tough for the most arduous training, so this is a timepiece that would best serve someone who is training for a triathlon or some other equally strenuous activity. Of course, if you just want it for hikes, it can definitely handle it, but in its price range.
Here’s a closer look at the 9 Baro by DC Rainmaker on Youtube:

See full specs of this watch on Suunto’s website.

Suunto Core

SUUNTO Core All Black Military Men's Outdoor Sports Watch - SS014279010
SUUNTO Core All Black Outdoor Sports Watch

If the Baro and Spartan seem a bit overstuffed for your needs, I would go with the Suunto Core.
In addition to being more affordable (check Amazon price here), the Core keeps things relatively simple. It foregoes health trackers and all the other features that make for helpful training partners and just gives you what you need for a good hike.
Those features include a compass, altimeter, barometer, and sunrise/sunset tracker. These are basic features that will take the guesswork out of any hike or climb and can be invaluable in new terrain. It even has a weather alert function, as well as other common watch features like a stopwatch, countdown timer, and alarms.
What this watch lacks are GPS and a long-lasting solar battery. For that reason, it might not be the ideal watch for taking on a hike into the unknown, but for most casual hikers (myself included), the Core is more than enough.
Suunto also makes the Traverse and the Ambit3 Peak, both great watches. The Traverse is specifically designed for hunting and fishing, while the Ambit3 Peak is a climbing watch. Still, if you like those activities, either one could double as a hiking watch. See full specs of the Core on Suunto’s website.

Garmin Instinct Solar-Powered Rugged Hiking Smartwatch

Garmin 010-02293-10 Instinct Solar, Solar-Powered Rugged Outdoor Smartwatch, Built-in Sports Apps and Health Monitoring, Graphite
Garmin Instinct Solar

The Garmin Instinct Solar is another option in the new Garmin solar line-up if you’re looking for paired-down functionality at a more affordable option than the flagship Fenix 6 reviewed above. The Gamin Instinct deliveres old-school rugged construction along with some advanced features to deliver one of the most well-rounded hiking watches to date.
The Garmin Instinct comes with the essential altimeter, barometer, and compass feature, which will assist greatly during hikes and camping trips.
Multiple GPS modes provide an accurate location at all times. In addition, the build of the Garmin Instinct meets the U.S. military standard 810G, which makes it shock and thermal resistant.
As for battery life, this timepiece can last up to 14 days straight with a single full charge, and this is with the GPS turned on.

Buyers Guide To Hiking Watches:

The most necessary features for a hiking watch
Having now looked at 10 of the best sports watches on the market, I’m sure a pattern has started to come into focus. These watches generally have a specific assortment of features that are absolute must-haves for any hikers or outdoorsy types. Let’s take a closer look at some of those features and why they’re so important.
GPS
GPS tracking is fairly vital for anyone who likes to get off the beaten path. A GPS (Global Positioning System) uses satellites to provide real-time positioning data. Understandably, there are people who would prefer not to have a satellite tracking them when they’re on a hike, so hopefully, they have a good sense of direction and a reliable Casio. Otherwise, the Garmin watches, as well as most of the Suunto and the TomTom, come equipped with this feature.
Compass, Altimeter, Barometer

These three features almost always come as a package deal, largely because they function together. A compass provides direction, an altimeter measures altitude (distance above sea level), and the barometer measures atmospheric pressure. Together, these tools help a hiker know where they are precisely and what kind of conditions they can expect. Even more than GPS, these tools are absolute necessities for a hiker, and they don’t require satellite connectivity.
ABC features have become standard issues on high-end watches for skiing, snowboarding, and other adventurous mountain sports where altitude, direction, and weather are major safety concerns.
Thermometer
Less of a necessity than a perk, a thermometer allows a hiker to keep track of temperature changes. This is especially helpful if you will be making a climb during your hike or if you plan on staying out overnight when knowing the temperature can help you make sufficient arrangements. Not every hiking watch will have a thermometer, but it’s nice when one is included.
Health and activity trackers
Here is where we get into the truly optional features. Smartwatches have helped make health and activity trackers popular. Even non-active people have turned to watches to track their daily steps and calorie consumption. If you’re a long-distance hiker or in the midst of training, trackers of these sorts (heart rate, steps, speed, sleep) can be great for helping you progress. For casual hikers, though, they’re probably superfluous. Still, they can be nice to have.
Solar-powered battery
The problem with a lot of the feature-heavy sports watches is that GPS and health trackers tend to use up battery power very quickly. That’s not a concern if you’re only out for a few hours, but if you plan on spending considerable time outside, solar-powered watches offer a handy solution. Additionally, it’s just better for the environment to utilize solar energy, and if there’s something a hiker should appreciate, it’s anything that pleases Mother Nature.
The best hiking watches, like the 10 we’ve looked at above, will combine most if not all of these features into a timepiece that is so much more than an accessory; it’s more like a companion.

Brands

Garmin
I have to admire what Garmin does with their sports watches. They’re a brand that really seems to get that simplicity of design doesn’t have to mean a lack of features. Take for instance the Fenix line of watches, which manages to pack a whole lot of functionality into sleek, ergonomically designed timepieces.

Casio Pro-Trek
For the last few decades, one of the most innovative companies in watchmaking has been Casio. Besides being one of the big names behind the rising dominance of digital watches in the 1980s, Casio is the brand behind the G-Shock line of nearly indestructible watches.

Suunto
Finnish watchmaker, Suunto, doesn’t have the name recognition of Casio, nor have they quite achieved Garmin’s reputation, but this company, which has been around for over 80 years, knows their trade. They have a wide selection of sports watch lines, all with their own unique pluses and styles.
Almost anyone of their watches would be a good companion on a long hike, but I’m going to focus on three of their best.

Polar
Polar Electro Oy (globally known as Polar) was founded in 1977. In 1982, Polar introduced the Sport Tester PE 2000, the world’s first portable wireless heart rate monitor. And in 1986, they released the first heart rate analysis software.
Polar is one of the most respected brands when it comes to fitness trackers and GPS smartwatches.  Polar also introduced the first device with an OHR sensor in 2015; this device is called the Polar A360. In 2016, the Polar M600 was released; this is their first sport-optimized smartwatch
