One of the mainstays in the Rolex catalog, since the early 1950s, is the high-caliber Explorer. This particular collection is its oldest sports watch, yet remains the most understated.

With over a seven-decade history, the Rolex Explorer has undergone some notable modifications and alterations while at the same time retaining its fundamental design traits. In this article, we’ll delve deeper into Rolex Explorer’s origin, including some of its top-tier watch models in the collection.

A Brief History of the Rolex Explorer

After several attempts to climb the summit and incoming snowstorms threatening the expedition, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay finally became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 2, 1953, at exactly 10:30 AM. On their wrists – at an altitude of almost 9km, fighting extreme conditions, low pressure, wind gusts, and temperatures below -45°C – two identical Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches

Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, was known to be a marketing genius. His philosophy for the company was: “Only great marketing is needed to make a company successful”. He certainly knew the power of product placement, so he supported the 1953 British expedition to Mt. Everest by equipping the men with Oyster Perpetual watches.

“The Rolex watches, with which members of the British team were equipped, proved their dependability on Everest.” wrote one member of the expedition. “We were delighted that they kept such accurate time. They performed splendidly, and we have indeed come to look upon Rolex Oysters as an important part of high climbing equipment.”

If ever there was a textbook example of perfect product placement – this is it!

Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became renowned around the world, and their achievement would capture the imagination of generation upon generation of future explorers.

That same year, 1953, Rolex released the Explorer Ref. 6350 model. The design was simple, yet sophisticated, with an inverted triangle at the top of the dial, printed Rolex text, and painted 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals indices. Legible, robust, and reliable, the Rolex Explorer is a true definition of a tool watch!

The Evolution of Rolex Explorer

Rolex Explorer Ref. 6610

In the 1950s, Rolex proudly introduced their new brainchild – the cutting-edge caliber movement 1030. This was Rolex’s first complete in-house movement, both designed and built by the Swiss brand. The newly launched caliber 1030 was a lot slimmer than its predecessors, and, more importantly – was chronometer rated. This new movement was first used with Rolex Explorer Ref. 6610 which saw, for the first time, the use of a flat caseback.

The Rolex Explorer Ref. 6610 features a sleek 36mm stainless steel case and bracelet. It comes with a handsome black dial, which is protected by plexiglass crystal. The dial is furnished with the famous 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals indices and an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock.

Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016

In 1963, Rolex released yet another iteration in the Explorer line. This one, the revered Explorer Ref. 1016, would become one of the longest-running sports watch references in the industry. But, not only that. It would also become one of the most sought-after and wanted references of all time. This reference, among other things, managed to survive all throughout the infamous Quartz crisis!

Like the older watch models, the Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 has the same 36mm case size, which is made of well-polished stainless steel. It is paired with a nice black dial and a stainless steel bracelet. Driving this model is the high-caliber caliber 1570, which is an automatic movement with a 48-hour power reserve. In addition, this timepiece is now equipped with an in-depth 100-meter water resistance rating.

Rolex Explorer Ref. 14270

Production continued until 1989, almost unchanged, except for a couple of small details: movement was upgraded, so Explorer received a hacking mechanism, and, more importantly, Rolex stopped using Radium and switched to Tritium instead. But, big changes were implemented in the late 1980s which saw the introduction of Ref. 14270.

The Rolex Explorer Ref. 14270 was one very different watch. Not so much because of its design features – those remained true to the core Explorer DNA. But a new era was slowly coming, and – Rolex was changing. The beautifully soft, distorting acrylic was replaced with cold, scratch-resistant flat sapphire crystal. A modernistic and cosmetic change, in line with the more and more luxurious nature of Rolex watches.

The Ref. 14270 is presented in a 36mm stainless steel case and bracelet. These things are paired with a beautiful black dial with the same 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals indices. What powers now this watch is a high-end caliber 3000 movement that delivers a 42-hour power reserve. A whopping 100-meter water resistance is also integrated into the watch.

Rolex Explorer Ref. 214270

New generation of consumers had little use for the utilitarian design features of old Explorer references. The 36mm watch, designed originally to be practical, elegant, and inconspicuous on the wrist, saw the biggest change in 2010 when Rolex supersized it from 36mm to 39mm, in line with modern trends and demands of the market.

But, weirdly enough, the Rolex Explorer Ref. 214270 (or the 39mm Explorer, as many call it today) was arguably the most polarizing Rolex Explorer reference to date. Many purist Explorer enthusiasts were appalled by this new reference, and change in size, claiming that only the 36mm Explorer is the “true” Explorer. Powering this timepiece is a top-notch caliber 3132 movement, delivering a 48-hour power reserve.

After Baselworld 2010, and the release of the 39mm Explorer, I vividly remember having many heated arguments with watch enthusiasts on the matter. I personally liked the new size. I welcomed the change because almost every “vintage” watch that I liked had one fatal flaw, for me at least – the size. 36mm is just too small for my wrist and I always wished those watches were a couple of millimeters larger.

Over the last two decades, Rolex and many other companies went larger and larger with their sports watches, following the trend. At some point, I really thought Rolex would release the Explorer in 41mm. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on the camp you sit in – they didn’t.

Rolex Explorer Ref. 124270

In 2021, with the newest and latest Rolex Explorer Ref. 124270, the brand went back to the old 36mm size. I did not expect that! I don’t think anyone in the industry really did. In the era of everything getting bigger and bigger, Rolex downsized its watch! The meaning and message behind it? I don’t know. Rolex works in mysterious ways sometimes. Perhaps the voices of those Rolex purists were finally heard.

The Ref. 124270 is crafted using a stainless steel case and bracelet. It is adorned with a nice black dial, which is protected by a sapphire crystal. Movement-wise, the brand utilized the top-tier caliber 3230 to power the watch. It delivers a superior 70-hour power reserve, with a useful water resistance rating of 100 meters.

Final Thoughts

The Rolex Explorer is a great watch and a true testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to precision, reliability, and elegance. With its timeless design, exceptional performance, and unrivaled reliability, the Rolex Explorer is truly a masterpiece in the world of horology. It’s a watch that is equally at home on the summit of Everest or in the boardroom, making it the perfect choice for the modern adventurer who demands the best.

Luminox vs. Hamilton – Watch Brand Comparison https://watchranker.com/luminox-vs-hamilton-watch-brands/ Mon, 21 Mar 2022 16:34:08 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=6251
To some readers, this brand comparison may seem totally off the mark. Why would we even compare a young brand like Luminox that was born in the late 1980s and focuses on watches worn by Navy Seals with a brand that is almost 100 years older and known for its stylish dress watches, classic field watches like the Khaki line and Avant guard design – such as the striking and now-iconic triangular case of the Ventura, made famous by Elvis Presley.
So, why are we even comparing them?
If you take a close look at the brands’ histories, they actually have more in common than you might think. Luminox’s whole premise and R&D hinge on their military and tactical approach to watchmaking while Hamilton also has a military connection going back to its very earlier roots when it was contracted by the US military.
While some of their watches are too far apart to even compare, there are plenty of match-ups that make for an interesting look.
Both watchmakers are well-known for their excellent field watches. Not only are Luminox and Hamilton excellent choices for their functionality and build, but they also provide an outstanding selection of stylish timepieces.

Luminox Brand Overview

Founded in 1989 by Barry Cohen, Luminox is considered a relatively new watchmaker in the industry. However, it wasn’t until 2006 that the fledgling watchmaker gained world popularity when they were purchased by Mondaine. This acquisition allowed Luminox to tap into the market of over 30 countries, greatly expanding its reach. In terms of reputation, Luminox is primarily associated with military and tactical timepieces. The brand’s first foray into the watchmaking industry is by supplying timekeeping devices for the U.S. Navy Seals.
Luminox watches are worn by special forces and also a staple within law enforcement, coast guard, and other military forces.
As you would have guessed based on Luminox’s prior partnerships, the brand is well-versed in developing timepieces designed to handle rough terrains and environments. While Luminox won’t win any awards when it comes to a refined aesthetic, it is a timepiece you would want with you when taking on the great outdoors. This reputation is further reinforced by the brand’s signature Luminox Light Technology which claims to allow the dial to be “Always Visible”, and judging from our experience – this claim holds. This constant luminosity is achieved thanks to the use of tritium tubes built into the watch hands producing luminescence without any need for external light sources.
When it comes to tactical watches, Luminox has certainly proved itself in this field. If you are looking for a reliable timepiece to wear for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and even swimming – you can’t go wrong with a Luminox watch.

Hamilton Brand Overview

Hamilton is another well-respected watch brand that has built a reputation with its excellent collection of field watches. While now considered as a Swiss watch brand, Hamilton was originally based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company first manufactured pocket watches and was primarily used by railroad companies during the late 1800s. Since the focus of their pocket watches was for use with trains and railroads, Hamilton focused on delivering accurate and reliable timepieces, which is a mindset that they took to heart even to this day.
Hamilton landed a contract with the U.S. Armed Forces as the army’s official supplier. It wasn’t until 1917 when Hamilton officially entered the consumer watch market, they took a lot of the lessons they learned from their time developing watches for soldiers and implemented them into their commercial watches.
In regards to reputation, Hamilton has ingrained itself into the American pop culture as the brand has appeared in hundreds of high-profile movies. Some examples include the first electric watch in the market, the shield-shaped Hamilton Ventura, became a personal favorite of the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley. Another milestone for the brand came when Hamilton was approached by legendary filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick, to design timepieces for his now-classic science-fiction opus, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Hamilton is one of the most versatile watch brands in the market today as they provide a collection of excellent timepieces designed for several applications. From outdoor to pilot watches, you can expect Hamilton to deliver a veritable selection of accurate and stylish timepieces.

Luminox vs Hamilton

Tactical Watches

Luminox Recon SPC 8830 Series (XL.8831.KM.L)

Luminox Recon SPC 8830

The Luminox Recon SPC 8830 nails the “tactical” part with its multi-functional design. This timepiece is equipped with highly professional military functionalities that will surely be a hit with individuals in that profession, as well as those who have an adventurous spirit. The Recon SPC 8830 is specifically designed for land use. It features several functions, most notably the tachymeter that measures your overall walking speed which will help in calculating the distance you have traveled. As you would expect, this particular feature is incredibly helpful for mountaineers, cyclists, hikers, and for use by army soldiers and operatives.
As for the physical attributes of this watch, it is certainly a substantial wristwear with its carbon-reinforced poly-carbonate 46mm case. That’s pretty big and might not complement those with smaller wrists. The tank-like case is also equipped with a sapphire crystal window with an anti-glare finish, which completes the outdoor-centric element of this timepiece. Another notable element of the case is the unidirectional bezel. The Recon SPC 8830 Series is also equipped with the Ronda 515 caliber movement which delivers an excellent level of accuracy.
This Luminox watch also comes with a nifty detachable compass on the strap and a water resistance rating of 200-meters. Of course, this is not a Luminox watch without their signature luminous technology that uses tritium tubes built into the dial hands.
Luminox has since come out with a newer version of the same concept with a built-in compass, this time as a collaboration with survivalist Bear Grylls and the Survival LAND Series – 3782 Tool Watch.

Hamilton Khaki Field Day Date Auto (H70695735)

Hamilton Khaki Field Day Date Auto

Applying a highly rugged all-black design, this Hamilton Khaki Automatic Field watch model certainly commands the attention it deserves. Equipped with Hamilton’s H-30 caliber automatic movement, you can expect top-notch accuracy with this timepiece. The watch movement also provides up to 80-hours of power reserve, making this watch highly reliable at all times. We also liked the textured pattern used on the black rubber straps which give the Khaki Field a level of complexity and distinctiveness from its competition.
As for key specifications, the Khaki Field Day Date Auto timepiece is relatively sleek with its 42mm stainless steel case. The dial features a day and date display with luminous hour markers to help legibility in low-light environments. The watch has a water resistance build of up to 50-meters, enough protection from the occasional splashes of water.

Pilot Watches

Luminox F-117 Nighthawk (XA.6422)

Luminox F-117 Nighthawk

Featuring a robust gunmetal aesthetic, the Luminox F-117 Nighthawk is one serious-looking timepiece. It features a 45mm PVD-plated stainless-steel case and a bidirectional rotating bezel. The dial window is made from durable sapphire crystal that is also coated with an anti-glare finish for improved legibility. The hour markers are bold and are quite easy to read. As pilot watches must deliver in legibility, the Luminox F-117 Nighthawk is designed so that you can check the time with a glance. This is further highlighted by the use of Luminox’s signature feature, the Luminox Light Technology which is also enhanced by the implementation of Super Luminova coating on the Arabic numeral markers as well as the bezel.
Another notable element is the water resistance of the F-117 Nighthawk which is rated at around 200-meters. That’s a pretty decent water resistance rating for what is designed to be a pilot watch.

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Watch (H64715535)

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Watch (H64715535)

Hamilton produces some of the best pilot watches in the business, and the Khaki Pilot Watch model number H64715535 is a perfect example. Featuring a classic and rugged design, this pilot watch is designed with professionalism in mind. The traditional aviator-style design of the dial ensures complete legibility at all times.
To provide optimum readability, the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Watch features a 46mm stainless steel case, thus, this is quite substantial in size.
The dial design is classy with bold Arabic numeral minute markers and a sub-dial in the middle that shows the hour markers. There is also a day and date display which is located over at the 3 o’clock position. This timepiece features automatic self-winding movement for optimum accuracy. Also, the case is designed to provide up to 200-meters of water resistance as well.

Luminox vs Hamilton – Which is Better?

Both Luminox and Hamilton come with a background in the military, making their timepieces somewhat similar. We feel that Hamilton does have the edge over Luminox based on several factors.
First, Hamilton has more heritage than Luminox and a much broader collection, this is a major factor for most watch enthusiasts. You will also get ETA movement with Hamilton as compared to the Swiss quartz movement that Luminox typically uses.
In terms of aesthetics, Luminox generally comes across as a tactical watch before anything else, like a very premium G-shock. That’s a generalization since they do have classic-looking field watches such as the Atacama series but overall the vibe is chunky and tactical.
Hamilton, on the other hand, is a more traditional watchmaker. They have a long history of making classic and timeless designs but they do throw in some wild curveballs in there like the Ventura series. Hamilton also has a wide selection of ladies’ watches, so for our female readers, Hamilton is the clear winner.
Overall, we feel that Hamilton has more to offer for someone looking for everyday watches or something a bit more formal or classy. However, if you’re looking for a purely tactical watch and prioritize luminosity – then Luminox is hard to beat.

Brief History of G-Shock Watches https://watchranker.com/history-of-g-shock-watches/ Sat, 19 Mar 2022 18:49:43 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=21529 A G-SHOCK GST-B100 with box on grey background
Known as “The Toughest Watch on the Planet,” the G-Shock watch line from Casio certainly earns that distinction. Not just a hollow marketing claim, the G-Shock is designed for the harshest environments on the planet. If ever you see an athlete or thrill-seeker within their element wearing a watch, it is more than likely a G-Shock model. G-Shock also made its mark both in the military and law enforcement industry. In this article, we will look at the illustrious and exciting history of the G-Shock watch.

History of G-Shock Watches

28 July 2019, Paris, France: G-shock wrist watches on shop window
To properly introduce what G-Shock is all about, it is best to start from the beginning and go through all the relevant milestones from there. So, let’s begin.

Where it All Began – Birth of the Toughest Watch on the Planet

G-Shock first came into the picture when Casio’s head of watch design, Kikuo Ibe, formed a small team called “Team Tough.” The team started development with this idea of a genuinely tough-as-hell in 1981.
The core idea of the G-Shock was the “Triple 10” design criteria; Ibe and his team wanted to create a watch with s 10-ATM water resistance, battery life of up to 10 years and could withstand the impact from a 10-meter drop.
However, the path to achieving their goal design was long and arduous. The team went through over 200 prototypes before perfecting the design. It wasn’t until Ibe saw a bouncing rubber ball in the local park that he got the idea for the G-Shock’s signature build.
Ibe concluded that the center of the ball doesn’t suffer from any shocks as the exterior absorbs all the impact. Hence, they based their design on this specific notion for the G-Shock model’s casing. This is why it is relatively light despite the rather large size of G-Shock watches. This is because G-Shock watches are hollow, with the primary timekeeping mechanism encased within a soft gel cushion.
With these three main goals in mind, Team Tough began developing the very first G-Shock. It took two years to complete and release the first model, the G-Shock DW-5000C.

The First Generation G-Shock Watch

G-Shock DW-5000C
DW-5000C (Image: Casio)

After two years in development and hundreds of redesigns and reiterations, Ibe and his team finally unveiled the first of many G-Shock models to come – the G-Shock DW-5000C. Launched in April 1983, the DW-5000C came in two variations: the DW-5000C-1A (black and red) and the DW-5000C01B (black and gold).
Of course, the G-Shock watch line won’t garner such a reputation for being just tough. The DW-5000C also featured several integral timekeeping functionalities that helped separate itself from the typical wristwatch. The original G-Shock incorporated a countdown timer, stopwatch, alarm, 12/24-hour mode, and a backlight. These features and its impressive durability made it quite enticing for sports and outdoor enthusiasts.

A Rough Start for the G-Shock Brand

Interestingly enough, initial sales of the first-generation G-Shock watch were quite slow. This weak sale statistic can be attributed to its primary appeal towards a relatively niche market. There were even talks about the G-Shock series being discontinued. Can you imagine that? However, a significant swing in momentum came in 1984 when Casio released the DW-5200 model, which incorporated a now-iconic commercial on Western shores.
The commercial featured the DW-5200 as a hockey puck to highlight its toughness. The sales of the DW-5200 skyrocketed in America thanks in part to the commercial. That commercial was so iconic that a similarly-themed G-Shock ad was made in 2018 for the G-Shock GMW-B5000 model.
While the G-Shock series began with the DW-5000C model, the watch line didn’t hit its stride until the DW-5200 model was released. Hence, the DW-5200 was dubbed the “Hero” model as it singlehandedly saved the G-Shock series.

G-Shock’s Rise to the Top

While G-Shock debuted in the 80s, it wasn’t until the 90s that the brand gained worldwide recognition. The 90s was indeed the golden age of G-Shock as this was the decade that introduced a lot of the staple features that modern G-Shocks still use to this day.
In addition to their highly practical and functional timepieces, G-Shock also burst through the mainstream with their limited edition models. These models were designed in collaboration with other famous artists, personalities, and brands. The most recent limited edition G-Shock was the GD-X6900MNM-1, a model developed in partnership with rap icon Eminem. Check out our list of the most sought-after limited edition G-Shock watches for further reference.
G-Shock also broke away from being a niche timepiece with the high-end and metallic MR-G series. In addition, the MR-G watch line showed that G-Shock is not just a sports timepiece for casual wear but also a watch that you can wear during formal occasions.

A More Feminine Touch – The Baby-G Watch Series

G-Shock always had the reputation of being a highly masculine timepiece due to its applications and large design. But, of course, Casio understood that there is a whole other market out there that they haven’t cracked yet with G-Shock. Enter the Baby-G watch line.
The G-Shock Baby-G is a series designed for women with its sleeker and lighter design. The Baby-G series debuted in 1994 with the charming DW-420, a more compact version that is just as tough as the original. Here is a complete rundown on the main differences between the G-Shock and Baby-G series. Fortunately, G-Shock also has a watch line for kids which is smaller but just as scrappy.

Here Comes the New Millennium

With G-Shock finally earning its spot in the market as a true powerhouse in the 90s, it is time to focus on revolutionizing the industry, which they did in the 2000s and beyond. During this era, Casio started developing G-Shock watches with outstanding features like the Twin Sensor, Triple Sensor, Bluetooth, Tough Solar, and Triple G Resist.

Never Complacent and Constantly Evolving

One of the most impressive aspects of G-Shock watches is how the series constantly reinvents itself. Not satisfied with being known as the toughest, G-Shock continuously ups its game whenever possible. Here is a timeline rundown of all the notable features and innovations added throughout the years.

1989

G-Shock AW-500E-1E Watch

The G-Shock AW-500 was the first in the series to feature analog timekeeping.

1992

G-Shock released the DW-6100 model three years later, which featured a built-in thermometer. This year was also the debut of the DW-5900, which features the signature triple graph dial design.

1993

This year saw one of the most popular G-Shock models introduced to the public, the Frogman DW-6300. This G-Shock model is the first to have a 200-meter ISO certification and is a highly reliable dive watch. Along with the first G-Shock dive watch was the unveiling of the first G-Shock model to incorporate EL backlight technology, the DW-6600.

2000

G-Shock eagerly met the start of the new millennium as they introduced the first of their Master of G series models, the GW-100, a key feature was that it incorporated radio control functionality.

2008

This year introduced the public to the G-9200 Riseman, the first to feature the Twin Sensor design. The Twin Sensor feature includes a compass and thermometer sensor, making the G-9200 an excellent pick for outdoor enthusiasts.

2009

A year later, a G-Shock model once again revolutionized the series. The GW-7900 model utilized a multi-band six radio-controlled feature and solar-powered batteries. Thus, ushering in the era of modern G-Shock multi-functionality.

2010

The GRX-5600 G-LIDE debuted during this year, and it is a pretty specific G-Shock watch for surfers, thanks to the tide graph feature. The same year also saw the release of the GLX-6900 G-LIDE, which is a deluxe version that offered both a tide graph and moon data feature.

2012

Another notable milestone came in 2012 when Casio released the GW-4000 Gravitymaster and its revolutionary Triple G Resist design. The Triple G Resist build further enhanced the durable G-Shock design by making it impact-resistant, centrifugal force-resistant, and vibration-resistant.
This year also saw the first G-Shock watch feature Bluetooth connectivity get its much-awaited debut. The GB-6900 Bluetooth is the first G-Shock to have smartphone connectivity and a definite game-changer for the series.

2014

GWN-1000B-1B Watch

It is definitely my favorite year in regards to G-Shock’s history. 2014 was an innovative year for the watch line with entries like the GWN-1000B Gulfmaster with its Triple Sensor V3 and smart access functionality. In addition, the GPW-1000 Gravitymaster also dropped simultaneously, which offered a patented Casio GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor technology.

2016

Another first came for the watch series with the first G-Shock with a built-in depth gauge, the GWF-D1000 Frogman. Also, they released the premium-grade GWN-Q1000 Gulfmaster with up to four built-in sensors.

2017

G-Shock once again innovated the industry with the GPW-2000 Gravitymaster, the first watch that comes with three-time correction systems.

2018

Pushing the limits of what an outdoor watch can deliver, G-Shock unveiled the highly impressive GPR-B1000 Rangeman, the world’s first solar-powered GPS navigation watch.

2020

G-Shock GBDH1000-1 Watch
GBDH1000-1 (Image: G-Shock)

G-Shock finally entered the sports watch arena with the GBD-H1000 G-Sport, which comes equipped with a heart rate monitor and GPS.

Why Is It Called G-Shock?

The head designer of G-Shock, Kikuo Ibe, wanted a watch that could withstand impacts and won’t even bat an eye if dropped. As you would have guessed, the “G” stands for gravity. G-Shock stands for Gravity Shock.
It is a watch designed to survive the “shock” of the impact caused by gravity. It is a pretty straightforward and cool name for a watch line that excels in delivering functionality and reliability.

Fossil Watches vs. Michael Kors – Watch Brand Comparison https://watchranker.com/fossil-vs-michael-kors-watches/ Fri, 18 Mar 2022 10:09:27 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=15047
Fossil and Michael Kors are both fashion watch brands that emphasize affordable quartz watches designed to make a fashion statement or accessorize an outfit. Because both of these brands offer similar kinds of familiarity in terms of aesthetics and price range, a comparison between the two is inevitable. If you’ve landed here, we’ll assume you are most likely aware of Fossil, and Michael Kors watches and are looking for a detailed comparison of the two – if so, you have come to the right place.
We will be looking at both these designer brands and determine which is the superior watchmaker. You may also want to check out our review of Fossil watches, and a more in-depth look at the Michael Kors watch brand if you are interested in further reading about these two trendy brands.

Fossil Brand Overview

Fossil is an American watchmaker founded in 1984, making it a relatively new watch brand compared to other long-standing names in the industry. Primarily known for its affordable quartz dress watches that originally were packaged in a fancy tin box, Fossil is now one of the bestselling fashion watch brands.  Fossil strategically positioned its brand in this niche market in the early 80s when quartz watches were just on the rise.
Although the brand is known for inexpensive dress watches, it doesn’t mean that its watches lack in the timekeeping performance department. Far from it, Fossil has proven itself to be quite capable of delivering aesthetically pleasing and affordable watches that also tell accurate time and are relatively well built, especially considering the price range.
Many of their watches use Japanese Miyota quartz movements known for their reliability and accuracy – they are also affordable which enables brands like Fossil to market watches at very affordable prices. . If you wonder how Fossil can maintain a fresh lineup of eye-catching watches annually, the answer is their openness to collaborate with other designers. Fossil watches have become a staple in the fashion industry with their bold and fantastic range of designs. You can always expect Fossil to deliver a wide variety of timepieces designed to cater to different individuals of different fashion tastes.

Michael Kors Brand Overview

Michael Kors watches are well-known within the fashion industry due to their name recognition among fashion designers. Michael Kors is first and foremost a designer of other fashion items such as handbags, shoes, and clothes so this brand is not exclusively in watchmaking. MK is certainly one brand designed to add flair to one’s attire with its luxurious style and attention-grabbing aesthetics. Michael Kors’ popularity can be attributed to their marketing strategy, which tapped into a more social media-focused approach. This leads to some thinking how MK would have faired a couple of decades ago without access to the internet, but that question is neither here nor there, and the MK watch brand has proven itself to be one of the more successful designer timepieces today.
While the company was founded in 1981, it wasn’t until the 2000s that Michael Kors finally tapped into the watch market. This leaves the MK brand lacking in horological heritage on par with other long-standing watchmakers. This lack of focus on watches is a common complaint by watch enthusiasts about the Michael Kors brand.
In terms of watch performance, it’s essential to mention that in 2004, the Michael Kors brand partnered up with the Fossil Group and licenses its watch production to Fossil. So whether you buy Fossil or MK, you’re getting a very similar build quality – typically Japanese Miyota quartz movements. MK watches differ in design and – logo – since many MK shoppers are buying fashion accessories based on the designer’s name recognition.

Fossil vs Michael Kors Watch Comparisons

Fossil Neutra Chronograph Watch (FS538)

Fossil Neutra

The Neutra Chrono watch is a dressy Chrono watch that represents the uniquely American qualities of the Fossil brand. It offers an ingenious design with a rugged charm that encapsulates that bold American way of thinking.
We also liked the mid-century style watch dial and crown as it gives it that traditional charm that will surely appease a certain group of watch enthusiasts.
As a dress watch, the Neutra Chrono meets all the essential pre-requisites, such as a balanced case size of 44mm, a thin stainless-steel case, allowing it to be worn underneath the cuffs of your sleeves and relatively light at 11mm thick and just under three ounces. The dial window is made from hardened mineral crystal, which gives it a decent level of durability. The brown leather strap completes the rugged aesthetics of the Neutra Chrono.
Underneath the classy design of the case is a quartz movement that operates its analog dials and sub-dials. The Neutra Chrono Watch provides a rather sharp and dapper way to complement your overall formal attire, and it delivers a rugged yet refined charm that is quite common with most Fossil watches. Also, this dress watch comes at an affordable price tag.

Michael Kors GAGE Chronograph Watch (MK8362)

The GAGE Chrono Watch features a silver-tone case with a blue sunray dial tied quite nicely by the brown leather straps. The dial features white-toned hands as well as bold Arabic numeral markers. There is also a date display and three sub-dials to further improve the overall functionality of this timepiece. As for the size of the GAGE Chrono, this timepiece features a 44mm x 12.5mm stainless-steel case – perfect for formal long-sleeved business attires. There is also a stationary bezel that adds to this traditional timepiece’s overall ‘professional’ look. The watch also comes with 100-meter water resistance, making it a viable wristwear when taking a stroll down the beach.
As you can see these two watches have similar build quality, case size and dimensions. However, although MK is known as a fashion designer, we actually like the aesthetic of the Fossil much more. The MK dial seems busy and crowded with too many details competing for attention. The Fossil on the other hand has a sleeker and cleaner dial layout and we like the minimalistic hour markers and indices. The subdials are easier to read and the finishing on the crown and pushers looks more polished and elegant than the MK. Both brands make their logo a focal point of the dial but at least Fossil’s is somewhat more discrete.
In the end, this is just one comparison but it is a clear example where a brand known for design (MK) doesn’t necessarily execute as well.

Are Fossil and Michael Kors Watches the Same?

While Michael Kors started as an independent watchmaker, the company partnered up with Fossil in 2004. This partnership meant that all Michael Kors watches would be designed, manufactured, and distributed by the Fossil Watch Group. Technically, Michael Kors is under the Fossil umbrella and is manufactured in the same factory. However, there are notable differences between the two in terms of aesthetics to give each a unique distinction. Additionally, Michael Kors already signed another 10-year partnership contract with Fossil back in 2014.

Conclusion: Fossil vs Michael Kors – Which is Better?

Based on the overall quality of their timepieces, it’s a tie since Fossil manufactures both. For the overall design, we will give the nod towards Fossil.  This may seem counter-intuitive with MK being a designer but we think the watches look busy and overstated with too much importance on the logo and MK branding. Also, when comparing similar watches side-by-side from both brands, the MK are usually priced slightly higher – it seems you may be paying a premium for the name recognition.
We didn’t delve into smartwatches in this article, but that’s one area where both brands compete and Fossil is the overall winner with its Gen 5 (and newer Gen 6). Both brands have a line of smartwatches and are considered some of the best hybrid smartwatches on the market.

Cartier Ballon Bleu – Short History & Buyers Guide https://watchranker.com/cartier-ballon-bleu-watch-guide/ Mon, 07 Mar 2022 15:21:39 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=20325 Cartier Ballon Bleu - Short History & Buyers Guide
French jewelry and watchmaker Cartier, one of the most prestigious jewelry and watch manufacturers in the world, is widely known for its uniquely-shaped watches–the rectangular-shaped Tank, the square Santos, and the tonneau-shaped Roadster. However, a collection introduced in the late 2000s changed this. After the maison introduced the Cartier Ballon Bleu or the Ballon de Cartier, a watch with a more conventional round shape, with the equally elegant craftsmanship, Cartier is known for.
The Cartier Ballon Bleu was introduced in 2007 when Cartier released a range of round timepieces. Several models are available–from the smaller 28mm women’s watches to more robust 46mm for men. The watches have a sculptural case and polished bracelet. The key feature is the elegant blue bubble sapphire cabochon on the winding crown, the sword-shaped hands, and the large Roman numeral markers. A modern classic loved by both men and women, it’s understated and elegant—a watch that looks good with casual and formal wear.
It did not take long for the Cartier Ballon Bleu to enjoy the same popularity as its older counterparts. This is one of the maison’s top-selling watches and continues to be one of the brand’s most popular models, with the brand reportedly selling more of it than other luxury watchmakers sell overall.
In this article, we’ll get to know the model better by discussing its design and functions and talking about its value in the market. We’ve also listed some of the most famous celebrities and personalities who have been spotted wearing it. Finally, we’re providing some suggestions on trusted sites where you can buy both brand new and pre-owned Ballon Bleu models.

What movement is in the Cartier Ballon Bleu?

The Cartier Ballon Bleu has both automatic and quartz movements. The Ballon Bleu has a wide range of models, with the stainless steel editions being the entry-level models. The ladies’ models are between 27mm and 37mm, and the men’s sizes are around 36 to 42mm. Some of the materials to choose from include stainless steel, rose gold or yellow gold, white gold, and a combination of gold and steel. According to Chrono24, one of the more affordable models is the ref. W69010Z4, a stainless steel model with a quartz movement, is available in 28mm and 33mm sizes.
Some models have special luxury features like dials studded with diamonds. There is also the exquisite Ballon Bleu tourbillon model (the Ballon Bleu Flying Tourbillon), a 39mm watch with a mechanical movement, an 18k white gold case, and a guilloche dial. The watch also has a power reserve of up to 50 hours. This model does not come cheap–it’s priced at $75,000 on Cartier’s official website when publishing this article.
For those who would like a more robust appearance, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier Carbon has sporty features: a carbon-based ADLC coating that makes it more durable and scratch-resistant. The chronograph version is powered by an in-house caliber 1904-CH2, a 44mm model with a 30-minute counter, date display, and small seconds.
A 2021 article on Hodinkee featured some of the latest Ballon Bleu models, with an in-house movement and a 40mm case (a size that is usually considered as a watch sweet spot by collectors). The article, which said that this was the “best Ballon Bleu yet,” discusses the in-house 1847 MC automatic movement, as well as the choices in features: a choice of steel or gold case, grey and sunburst dial, steel and alligator strap bracelet, and an option of having with or without diamonds. Celebrities That Wear The Cartier Ballon Bleu

The Ballon Bleu, though a relatively newer line, is slowly becoming a favorite among collectors. It’s a modern classic commonly seen on more and more celebrities.
One of the most famous celebrities spotted with the Ballon Bleu is Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. According to Kate Middleton Style, a blog that featured the Duchess of Cambridge’s style, she owns the 33mm silver stainless steel, with the iconic blue sword-shaped hands, opaline dial, Roman numeral markers, and the blue cabochon. The site also has a gallery of photos where the Duchess wears the model.
Cartier is a popular choice among royals. Princess Diana owned a Cartier Tank and a Cartier Tank Francaise. Meghan Markle has been seen wearing one of Diana’s watches and owned a Tank watch that she purchased as a gift to herself in 2015. You can read more about this in our article on Iconic Cartier Watches on Watch Ranker.
Other celebrities who have been spotted wearing the Ballon Bleu are Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lindsay Lohan, Sofia Vergara, Kris Jenner, and Simon Cowell.

Does The Cartier Ballon Bleu Retain Value?

TANK MUST WATCH
Cartier Tank Platinum Watch (Image: Cartier)

It would be difficult to predict the resale value of watches, as it all depends on the consumers’ demands and tastes. Still, sources suggest that many Cartier watches and jewelry hold their value. In some cases, they even increase over time (although pre-owned items from the brand’s jewelry line are more likely to have a higher value).
According to Watches Guild, you can resell the classic and vintage Cartier models at higher values because of the gold material used, as well as the vintage look. Gold models will naturally have higher resale values than stainless steel ones, especially if the seller keeps the original box and documentation.
One brand that is commonly compared to Cartier in the resale market is Rolex. Cartier watches are significantly more affordable compared to Rolex models. One reason for this is the movement—Cartier has both quartz and mechanical watches, while Rolex has stopped producing watches (the Swiss watchmaker stopped the production of the Oysterquartz in 2001).
The article, however, mentions that while Cartier watches do not hold their value as well as Rolex pieces, they still have a good resale value compared to other luxury brands.
Though Cartier is also widely known as a jewelry maker, the brand has an excellent reputation in the horology world. It is considered one of the world’s most influential luxury watchmakers. With their elegant and timeless designs, Cartier watches are an excellent watch investment.

Where To Buy Cartier Ballon Bleu Watches

If you’re not able to go to an actual Cartier store or Cartier dealer, there are plenty of places online to purchase Ballon Bleu models. The brand’s official website, Cartier.com, has nearly a hundred Ballon Bleu models to choose from.
If you would like to purchase pre-owned models, an excellent place to start is Bob’s Watches, a popular reselling website known for the resale and trade of watches. While the site is known to focus on pre-owned Rolexes (they are known as the “World’s First and only Pre-Owned Rolex Exchange),” they also sell other big names like Cartier. According to an article by Insider, this is a trusted website. Every watch sold here is certified authentic (both model and its parts), with specialists inspecting the watch before a transaction is completed.
Another website that sells pre-owned Cartier Ballon Bleu models is Jomashop, a grey market watch seller (meaning they don’t sell fakes or counterfeits) that sells luxury watches at a lower price. They can sell the watches for a lower price than the dealership because they purchase them at a lower price from manufacturer-authorized dealers and then mark the watches with a relatively affordable price tag. Check out Ballon Bleu models on Jomashop here.
Those looking for a pre-owned Cartier Ballon Bleu can also check out the models sold on eBay. This page has a wide range of models, including this unused 28mm stainless steel model and this pre-owned XL chronograph.
If you would like to visit a physical Cartier store, you can find branches on this site, which lists all of their locations worldwide.

Cartier Roadster – A Short History & Buyers Guide https://watchranker.com/cartier-roadster-watch-guide/ Wed, 12 Jan 2022 12:01:46 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=19400
Cartier Roadster - A Short History & Buyers Guide

When one mentions French brand Cartier, one of the oldest and most popular watchmakers and jewelers in the world, some of the first models that would come to mind are probably the Santos, the first modern wristwatch, and the Tank, one of the most iconic and successful watches of all time.

In this article, we’ll talk about a Cartier model that may not be as popular as the two, but is equally creative and revolutionary. The Cartier Roadster, though discontinued after a little over a decade, continues to enjoy popularity among watch collectors and aficionados.

Following the distinct styles of other Cartier models (such as the classic tank and the square-shaped Santos), the Cartier Roadster has an iconic look of a tonneau-shaped case (tonneau means “barrel” in French), a shape that was used by Cartier around 1906.

The Cartier Roadster watch was inspired by sports cars from the 1960s (think Mercedes Benz and Aston Martin), thus the name. It became a popular sports and dress watch, available in men’s (43mm x 38mm) and women’s (36mm x 30mm) sizes, as well as in automatic and quartz movements.

The watch has models with both Roman and Arabic numerals and both with chronograph and GMT functions. Throughout the years, when Cartier was still selling them, the Roadster also had releases with features that are more luxurious (dotted with diamonds, for instance).

One of the most famous features of a Cartier Roadster model is the dial that takes its inspiration from the Porsche 356 speedometer from the 1950s. This is the model with Arabic numeral markers, known to fans as the “Las Vegas” dial.

It is also likely that the crown was inspired by cars too—some agree that it looks like rally wheels of a Corvette, while others say that it looks like a car radiator. This is one of the brand’s first models to have the quick-release lug system, which allows easy strap or bracelet replacement.

When & Why Was The Cartier Roadster Discontinued?

Cartier Roadster W62000V3
Cartier Roadster

The Cartier Roadster was released by Cartier in 2001. The French watchmaker discontinued production of the watch around 2012. Since then, the Cartier Roadster only became available in the pre-owned watch market.

Around the late 2000s, Cartier released the Roaster S model. This model had a relatively friendlier price tag, and the same classic tonneau case. It, however, got rid of some elements like the screws on the lugs.

The watch may have had a relatively short run, but it continues to be regarded as one of the most iconic sports watches ever produced. From the unique case and distinct design to the high-quality watchmaking, Roadster models continue to be popular, available in second-hand stores.

The Cartier has both automatic and quartz movements. The Cartier Roadster Automatic models are powered by the Cartier 2894 caliber which is based on the  ETA 2894 but assembled and finished to Cartier’s own standards.

Quartz Roadster models are powered by the Cartier Calibre 688 Quartz Movement with 7 Jewels.

Celebrities That Wear The Cartier Roadster

Luxurious and timeless, Cartier is one of the most popular watches worn by celebrities.

The Cartier Tank has been spotted on iconic like Yves Saint Laurent, Princess Diana, and Andy Warhol (who once said: “I don’t wear a Tank watch to tell the time. In fact, I never wind it. I wear a Tank because it’s the watch to wear”). Anne Hathaway has been seen wearing a Panthere de Cartier, and Meghan Markle reportedly owns a gold Cartier Tank Francaise that used to belong to Princess Diana.

One A-list celebrity who owns a Roadster is Jennifer Aniston. She has been spotted wearing a 30mm Roadster in stainless steel. The watch has Roman numeral markers and has a silver dial.

Aniston is a known collector of luxury watches—learn more about her collection.

Other celebrities that have been seen wearing the Cartier Roadster include DJ Paul Van Dyk, NBA basketball played Christ Paul and football superstar Christiano Ronaldo.

Comedian Kristen Wiig has reportedly mentioned in an interview that she owns a Roadster that means a lot to her.

Does The Cartier Roadster Retain Value?

Cartier Roadster 31mm Stahl Box & Papiere
Cartier Roadster 31mm

Cartier watches have good resale value, but many experts say that they may not hold their value as well as other luxury watch brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe.

In a thread on Watchuseek, however, owners of Cartier watches, including the Roadster, vouched for the brand, saying that it remains excellent after years of use.

Another user also pointed out that when one buys a watch, it’s not just the movement or materials they’re buying, but its history. A Cartier may not have the top resale value, but its timeless design is reason enough to be a part of one’s luxury watch collection. The design is undoubtedly unique—the Tank is one of the most iconic watches ever made, and the Santos is the first modern wristwatch.

The resale value may not be the same as its luxury watch counterparts, but second-hand models are still pretty pricey. See the next section to know where to find them.

Where To Buy Cartier Roadster Watches

Though discontinued by the brand for nearly a decade now, there are still plenty of Cartier Roadster models available for sale online.
One of the sites that has excellent options is Bob’s Watches, a trusted reseller of luxury watches. It has a number of Roadster models available, such as a pre-owned Roadster 2617 model with an automatic movement, Roman numeral markers, and a stainless steel bracelet.
There’s also Jomashop, which has several Roadster models.
eBay is also another option. Check out this page to see all available Roadster models on the site, like this classic Roadster ref. 2510, with a stainless steel case, silver dial, and Roman numeral markers.

Swiss Smartwatches https://watchranker.com/swiss-smartwatches/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 14:35:06 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=19090 When it comes to watches, Swiss-made products continue to enjoy an excellent reputation. Swiss watchmakers produce some of the best timepieces in the world, and they keep up with the times, making both traditional and digital models with the same craftsmanship they apply to traditional watches.
When one talks about smartwatches, one of the first brands that come to mind are companies like Apple, Samsung, and Garmin. While these are indeed some of the most competitive brands out there, there are other companies that provide the same level of craftsmanship.
Many top Swiss watch brands, who are known for meticulous and traditional watchmaking processes, have since learned how to adapt to ever-changing technology, have a wide array of smartwatches to choose from. Below, we’re going to talk about some of the best ones on the market today.

If you’re looking for a smartwatch, Swiss watch companies have shown that they are just as skilled as their American counterparts. Here are some of the best Swiss models today—from having hybrid (a combination of digital and analog) to full-on digital features.

Best Swiss Smartwatches

Montblanc Summit Collection

Mont Blanc Summit

Swiss watchmaker Montblanc has the Summit collection, which the brand describes as “fine watchmaking meets state-of-the-art technology.” This line of watches has smartwatch essentials—aside from providing the time, it also has functions under Wear OS by Google, as well as different connectivity options (WiFi, GPS, LTE, or Bluetooth).
There are currently three types of watches under the Summit range: Summit Lite, Summit 2, and Summit 2+. It is worth noting that Summit 2+, which has a slightly bigger case, is the first LTE-enabled smartwatch powered by Wear OS.
What makes Summit watches special are the exclusive apps. Built for those who need health and fitness functions, it has the Cardio Coach feature, which has live coaching advice and personalized workouts. It also has the Stress Management feature, which helps the wearer track their physical and mental stress levels. Those who need a clearer picture of their sleep habits can use the Sleep Quality feature, which has personalized recommendations to improve rest and sleep quality.
Mondaine Helvetica No.1 Swiss Made Smartwatch (MH1B2S80LB)
Mondaine Helvetica No.1 Swiss Made Smartwatch (MH1B2S80LB)

Mondaine is a company known for watches that have the same design as the official Swiss railway clock face, as well as watch layouts that are easy to read. One of their most popular watch designs incorporates the Helvetica, one of the most popular and most commonly used typefaces.
The Mondaine Helvetica No. 1 is a type of “hybrid” smartwatch, which means it has both analog and digital features. This type of smartwatch is for those who are looking for something that doesn’t look too “digital,” a timepiece that still looks like a regular watch, but has digital smartwatch functions like pairing with Android or iOs, activity tracking (as well as health, sleep, and steps).
One of the special things about this model is the long battery life—a regular, digital smartwatch needs to be constantly charged, but this one has up to over two years of battery.
If you’d like to read more about hybrid smartwatches, you can visit this article, where we talk about the technology and the different watchmakers that make them.
Frederique Constant Vitality Smartwatch
FREDERIQUE CONSTANT Smartwatch Gents Vitality FC-287BG5B4

The watches still look like regular watches (with the brand’s famous branding at 12 o’clock), but has digital functions.
The Frederique Constant Vitality model, available in Ladies and Gents sizes, looks like a simple, classic watch with a plain black dial and a combination of Roman numeral and index markers. This model, however, has a digital display at 6 o’clock that shows information when the crown is pressed.
The digital functions can be connected to the brand’s app, where the wearer can keep track of their health and lifestyle data, such as heart rate and sleep. It also has time and notification features like weather, message review, and alarms.
The Gents Vitality line has a number of styles available (check them out here).
Alpina AlpinerX Smartwatch

All AlpinerX models can gather data to the wearer’s smartphone using the brand’s companion app. This collection has a number of versions, like different strap colors and materials. Check out the Alpina site to see them.
There are also get-active alerts, breathing exercises, and the “dynamic coach” feature, which are for those who need guidance in their fitness goals.
TAG Heuer Connected Smartwatch

This one’s a luxury smartwatch model from TAG Heuer. The brand’s Connected smartwatch, which is made from Grade 2 Titanium and stainless steel, has a 100% active screen and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Some of the main features include an accelerometer, GPS, compass, and a heart rate sensor.
Powered by WearOS by Google, the TAG Heuer Connected Smartwatch gives notifications of calls, texts, and emails. It also has a “personal assistant feature,” which can give the wearer meeting information and updates, as well as a translate feature, something that can come in handy when you’re traveling.
There are a number of models to choose from (see them all here), such as this online exclusive with a steel case and a khaki rubber and leather strap. The wearer can either use the touchscreen feature or the crown and push buttons to navigate the wide array of features like pre-installed apps for fitness (Tag Heuer Sports, Tag Heuer Wellness) and a heartrate monitor.
There are some models that have since been discontinued (like the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45), but remain available on sites like Amazon.
Hublot Big Bang e Smartwatch
BIG BANG E BLACK CERAMIC
Hublot Big Bang e Smartwatch (Image: Hublot)

Hublot introduced the Big Bang line in 2005, then its connected version in 2018 (the Big Bang Referee, which marked the 2018 FIFA Football World Cup). Since the digital version’s release, the brand has created high-quality luxury smartwatches that combine Hublot’s watchmaking expertise and the latest digital innovations—or what the brand calls “a fusion between tradition and innovation.”
The Big Bang e watch has a 42mm case and is available in grade 5 titanium or micro-blasted and polished black ceramic. Available in both Android and iOs, the watch is powered by WearOS by Google. The wearer can able to access apps on Google Play, as well as make use of Google Assistant or Google Pay.
Other features include a perpetual calendar, GMT, and an array of digital Hublot watch faces, including one by contemporary artist Marc Ferrero, who has other design collaborations (such as this one) with Hublot. The watch is also water-resistant to 30m.
Hublot notes that the availability of some features like the Google Assistant or Google Pay may vary on the platform and the country where they’re being used.
A review by A Blog To Watch reviews that the watch is similar to the Big Bang, in a way that one can forget that it’s a smartwatch. It points out, however, that the watch does not have a heart rate monitor, a feature that is commonly available in mainstream brands like Apple and Garmin. The review also says that while it’s pricey for a smartwatch, it’s a relatively affordable timepiece for a Hublot watch. You can read the rest of the review here.
Alpina Women’s Horological Smart Analog Display Swiss
Alpina Women's AL-285STD3CD6B Horological Smart Analog Display Swiss Quartz Silver Watch
Alpina Women’s Horological Smart Analog Display Swiss

Another one by Alpina, this one is under the women’s line. The Alpina Swiss Horological Smartwatch, a hybrid, has an analog display and digital functions. Like the Frederique Constant model above, this looks more like a regular watch than a smartwatch, making it perfect for those who want something that has both traditional and digital features.
Some of the main features of this watch are an activity tracker, sleep monitoring, adaptive coaching, and “Get-Active” alerts, which let the wearer know if they had been idle. Powered by Android and iOs, the watch also has a coach feature that gives suggestions on how to reach goals, a world timer, and a cloud storage option that independently stores the phone data for 30 days without it being synchronized to the owner’s smartphone.
This 39mm dress-style watch has a stainless steel case and elegant diamond markers, minute markers around the outer rim, and a combined date and 1/100th second subdial. The watch is also water-resistant to 100m.

Poljot Soviet Watches – Then & Now (Sturmanskie, Buran, Aviator, Strela) https://watchranker.com/poljot-soviet-watches/ Tue, 19 Oct 2021 12:57:14 +0000 https://watchranker.com/?p=19463 Poljot the brand logo cover
Poljot Introduction
Poljot the brand was started in 1964 by the First Moscow Watch Factory (sometimes abbreviated as FMWF) as its flagship for the USSR watch industry.
During its active years, the brand, along with other associated names such as Strela and Sturmanskie, made a name for Russian watchmaking mainly for their watches going to space. In 2004, when Poljot filed for bankruptcy in 2004, the brand names were bought out by companies such as MakTime and Volmax.
Today, Poljot’s legacy is carried by those brand names, as well as (spiritual successors) such as Poljot-International. The brands bought from the original Poljot now sell watches under Strela, Sturmanskie, Buran, and Aviator. The brand’s history however has become fairly challenging to piece together, as the various brands have their own accounts of their roots.

Poljot Brand History
The First Moscow Watch Factory started as the First State Watch Factory for the purpose of supplying the Red Army with watches without the need for importing parts. The FMWF adopted the Poljot brand name in 1964 in honor of Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight in 1961 when he wore a Sturmanskie watch manufactured by the FMWF.
During the time of Poljot, it was known for the caliber 3133 for chronographs, caliber 2612 alarm clock, the automatic caliber 2416, and the caliber 2614. The caliber 3133 was arguably the most well-known, being cased in the very recognizable and iconic Strela Chronograph, which itself is known for being worn by Alexei Leonov in 1965 during the first spacewalk.
Equally as iconic is the caliber 2609, which was cased in the Poljot (then FMWF) Sturmanskie that Yuri Gagarin wore, being one of the first watches in space.
In the 2000s, however, Poljot filed for bankruptcy, which resulted in the Poljot name ending under the ownership of businessman Sergei Pugachev, and with their brand names being splintered off into different watch companies.
The First Moscow Watch Factory, however, was bought by former employees, who had then formed Volmax, under which the brands Sturmanskie, Buran, and Aviator were established. Strela, on the other hand, ended up manufactured by the Russian firm MakTime.
Today, the Sturmanskie, Buran, Aviator, and Strela brands live on, albeit with different fates. Sturmanskie is still based in Russia, while Strela is now based in Germany, and both Aviator and Buran are now based in Switzerland.

The flagship of Sturmanskie is the Sturmanskie Gagarin “The First”. This iteration is the most faithful recreation of the original Yuri Gagarin space watch in Sturmanskie’s selection.
The watch comes in a choice of stainless steel or rose gold-plated 33mm steel case with brushed sides (the same size as the original watch Yuri Gagarin wore) with mineral crystal and 5ATM water resistance. Both also come with a choice of either an Ivory or a Black dial.

The long seconds hand is painted red, and the pencil hour and minute hands are black. The Arabic numerals and the hour and minute hands have cream-colored Super-LumiNova lume. The sizable crown complements the pilot style of the watch.
The watch is powered by a manual-winding Poljot caliber 2609 movement with a 40-hour power reserve. Lastly, this reference comes with a leather strap and a signed buckle.
Alternatively, Sturmanskie also offers the Gagarin Classic 33, a simpler, Portugieser-esque version of the watch with a more clinical black or silver/grey dial. This option is a more dressy and understated alternative to the original design which has more military sensibilities.
Strela

Similarly to Sturmanskie, Strela stays true to its Russian roots, best exemplified by the Strela Cosmos CO38CYB, a reissue or spiritual successor of the Caliber 3017 Strela chronographs, the Strela Sekonda black dial chronograph in particular.
The case is very much similar to the original, but with a 1mm bulk up at 38mm. It also has a brushed finishing on the sides and polished finishing for the bezel and tops of the lugs. The unsigned crown is polished with a good size providing substantial grip. The start and stop chronograph buttons are baguette-shaped with framing. One thing to note is the thickness of the watch at 15mm, which is on the thicker side.
The dial is faithful to one of the original dial variations. It has an outer tachymeter track and an inner telemeter track. The two subdials cover running seconds and a 30 minute counter. The hands are the very recognizable Strela chronograph hands, with lume on the hours, minutes, and subdial hands.
Lume is also present for the stick indexes, subdial numerals, and Strela logo, which makes for a very readable watch in the dark when the lume is activated. While lit, however, the lumed features of the watch are a minty green color, which contrasts well with the black dial of the watch.
The watch is powered by the manual winding, 23-jewel Poljot 3133 Maktime movement, a reissue of the older Poljot 3133 movement, which was itself a successor of the original caliber 3017. The original Poljot 3133 shares many identical parts with the Valjoux 7734, due to Valjoux selling their old machinery to the USSR.
Compared to the Valjoux 7734, caliber 3133 has its chronograph gears running with jewels, it has a shock protection system in place for the Glucydur balance, and the balance size was reduced to raise the beat rate.
It features a 21,600bph beat rate, the chronograph complication with a 30-minute counter, and a date at either between the 4 and 5 indices or at the 6 o’clock position depending on the release. With the chronograph activated, the power reserve clocks in at 37 hours, while with the chronograph inactive, the power reserve boosts up to 42 hours.
Finally, the watch comes with a 19mm leather strap.
Buran

As opposed to the other brands, Buran does not seem to have its own independent website for its brand. They do however have watches on established websites such as poljot24.de, or poljotuhren.de.
That said, and staying faithful to Russian designs, the Buran 1259A Chronograph is a very good choice.
The watch shares a very similar look with the Strela Cosmos CO38CYB, except instead of hints of green and red, the Buran has mainly white details with hints of red. Further, unlike the Strela, it also has a third subdial at the 6 o’clock position in the form of a 24-hour indicator.
The date window for the Buran is only in between the 4 and 5 o’clock indexes. The lume on the Buran is kept mainly on the indexes, and the hour, minute, and chronograph hand. Unfortunately, it is not very clear if the subdial hands and the logo are also luminous.
The main difference between the Strela Cosmos and the Buran 1259A is the movement. The Strela utilizes the Poljot Maktime 3133, while the Buran utilizes the Poljot MakTime 31681. The Poljot Maktime 31681 has 25 jewels (versus the 23-jewel 3133), is a cam-controlled, coulisse lever system movement, and beats at 21,800 bph. The main difference is the addition of the 24-hour indicator complication.
Lastly, the watch comes in a signed Buran leather strap, with a signed buckle as well.
Aviator
AVIATOR DOUGLAS DAY-DATE 41 V.3.35.2.275.4
AVIATOR DOUGLAS DAY-DATE 41 (Image: AVIATOR)

The most accessible watch in Aviator’s catalog in terms of size and complications is the Douglas Day-Date 41. The watch was inspired by the 1935 American Douglas DC-3 transport aircraft.
As the name implies, the watch comes in a 100M water-resistant 41mm polished stainless steel case, with a PVD gold option. The case features rounded steps, which would aid in fitting under cuffs. The dial features pencil hands with Superluminova, the full-word day at 12, and the date at 6. It has a textured surface, with applied Roman numerals, indexes also with SuperLuminova and elevated text.
Further, the reference has three dial color options for the stainless steel (black, green and blue), and four for the PVD gold (the same colors, plus brown). Interestingly, the Aviator logo appears above everything, being printed on the sapphire crystal.
The crown is signed with the Aviator “A”, and is a smaller, sharper, and more conical spin on the onion crown, while still remaining sizable in relation to the case. The lugs are simple but curve onto the wrist which helps provide a better fit of the watch on the wrist.
The movement for the watch is an automatic Swiss caliber AV-1000 based on the Sellita SW240-1, which features a 28,800bph beat rate, a day-date complication, and a 41-hour power reserve. This can be seen through a display caseback which is secured by four screws. The caseback also features the Aviator logo in the crystal. For the PVD gold options, the rotor is also in PVD gold.
The watch comes with a 20mm Aviator-branded leather strap that matches the dial color of your choice, and a deployant buckle.
Poljot Brand Reputation
As narrated in its history, Poljot, or the First Moscow Watch Factory, is well known for its watches going to space, as well as being robust, reliable, and accurate.
Today, the Poljot brand sensibilities live on through the companies that still reissue the original watches, albeit with modern, but minimal tweaks to the designs and movements. The most recognizable brands that resulted from Poljot’s bankruptcy are Maktime Strela and Volmax Sturmanskie, since both those brands still manufacture watches that are faithful or at least very close to the originals. Buran and Aviator, since moving to Switzerland have adopted their own design languages and branding which are very distant from their original Russian roots.

Are Sturmanskie, Strela, Aviator, and Buran good brands?
This would depend on a number of factors including your wrist size, your budget, and your preferences, and your ability to source and choose the watches from the brands’ collections.
When searching for Poljot watches, you are most likely looking for watches that resemble the originals or at least share their design sensibilities.
To get them out of the way, the design language and marketing of Buran and Aviator have deviated from their roots in Russian watchmaking, as they are both now marketed as and known for being Swiss brands.
True to the name, the designs by Aviator have more British/American pilot watch influence, with their more utilitarian and practical designs (save for the gold options). The dials are very easy to read, and the designers seem to have made sure to avoid any superfluous features, which makes for honest watches.
Some contentious points however would have to be the large sizes of their selection, with 41mm being the smallest diameter offered (save for the Douglas Moonflight which comes in at 36mm but seems to be designed to be marketed more towards women), and the brand does not offer any mechanical chronographs.
Buran, on the other hand, seems to have a bigger pool of influences that may detract from its brand recall. The collections have a mix of pilot watch designs, elegant dress watch designs, and sports designs. At a glance, they may be mistaken as a smaller Swiss brand, but the watches themselves remain solid despite the identity issues the brand may be facing.
Now on to Strela and Sturmanskie, the two companies are more likely to be more well known, as they have kept on a defined path, and have a clear vision of how they want to market themselves. While both brands have reissued the watches that put them on the map, both have been able to grow their brands with those foundations set with their roots. The brands provide wide selections that cater to both those who are looking for classic designs and those who want more modern releases that stay true to the Russian design language.
Ultimately, the four brands that resulted from the bankruptcy of the original Poljot all have diverse, and quality watches. However, when planning to purchase, you must sufficiently determine the type of watch you are going for, and whether heritage is a deciding factor.
The short of it is that Sturmanskie remains in Russia, and Strela which is now based in Germany, both remain true to their Russian roots, while Aviator and Buran have gone the route of Swiss watches.

Unfortunately, the general misconception is that good watches are only made by expensive brands that market to celebrities and other wealthy people that have lots of cash to burn.
Although it’s true that many watches are considered luxury items with price tags to match, there’s a wide variety of watch brands that are dedicated to making quality timepieces at an affordable price. Actually, there are so many entry-level brands out there that filtering through all the watches in this price range to find the most reputable brands can be time-consuming and confusing.
Below you’ll find our curated list of brands that sell at an attractive price point while still maintaining high standards for quality. These watches come from brands with well-established reputations, watchmaking history and product guarantees to back their watches.
Many of the brands listed below are now household names while many of these brands may be new to you.  What all these brands have in common is that they make reliable and quality watches at reasonable prices that people on an average salary can likely afford.
Almost all of the brands below have also been featured on our lists best under $500 watch lists and many of them even have models in the sub-$100 range.
So without further delay, here you have the current list of top affordable watch brands.

Best Affordable Watch Brands

Timex

Timex Unisex T2N651 Weekender 38mm Olive Nylon Slip-Thru Strap Watch
Timex Weekender

Timex is considerably one of the biggest watch companies in the world today. This is perhaps attributable to the company’s commitment to its philosophy of creating affordable clocks and watches. From a small company that started in Waterbury, Connecticut; it is now called the Timex Group officially which is currently headquartered in the Netherlands. Its companies are strategically located throughout the globe – in the United States, India, and the Philippines.
Aside from affordability, the brand is also known for the simplicity and durability of its timepieces. The company offers a wide range of models and even presents special watches occasionally. Examples of these special watches are the Mickey Mouse watches, Timex Ironman, and the V-conic.

Casio

Casio Men's Vintage A168WA-1 Electro Luminescence Watch
Casio Electro Luminescence

Next on the list is one of the brands frequently compared with Timex – we’re talking about Casio. It is actually an electronics company that originated in Japan. It has developed different kinds of products, from finger ring pipes to calculators, to digital cameras, digital watches, and many more.
Casio started producing digital watches in the 90s and it has continued to thrive from that point. It now has several popular collections including G-Shock (which we will discuss in detail later on), Baby-G, Pro Trek, Edifice, Classic, Dress, and Vintage.

G-Shock

Casio GA100L-8A XL Ana-Digi G-Shock
Casio GA100L-8A XL Ana-Digi G-Shock

Although we just mentioned Casio, we think it’s worth a separate entry on the list. As one of Casio’s biggest collections and due to its unique look and build, many watch shoppers consider a separate brand.
G-Shock watches are usually known for a wide range of designs and durable build. They are all tough, waterproof, and shock-proof.  Although some G-Shock watches can be quite expensive, when it comes to tactical outdoor watches, they also offer some of the best value for money.
G-Shock offers a very wide range of impressive watches. As such, we have made several posts on G-Shock watches, such as G-Shock for Teenagers, G-Shock for Women, G-Shock for Police, and even for those With Small Wrists.

Seiko

Seiko Men's SRPA21 Prospex X Padi Analog Hand and automatic, Silver
Seiko Prospex Dive Watch

Another popular watch brand from Japan is Seiko. Unlike Casio that has diverse products, Seiko specializes only in creating high-quality watches since it was founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1881. Its commitment is to promote Japanese craftsmanship through its timepieces.
More so, Seiko is able to expand its range – from affordable watches to high-end timepieces that can even compete with Swiss watch brands. Regardless of the collection and their prices, Seiko watches are known for their durability, precision, and style.

Orient

Orient Men's 'Mako II' Japanese Automatic Stainless Steel Diving Watch, Color:Silver-Toned (Model: FAA02002D9)
Orient Men’s ‘Mako II’ Watch

Next, we have Orient. You might be surprised to see this brand on this list since it is usually compared with Swiss watch brands and you might have thought that their products are quite costly. However, the truth is that high-quality Orient timepieces are actually very affordable.
Orient is currently a subsidiary of Seiko yet the company continued to make its own movements to maintain its exceptional quality. There are four primary Orient collections – Classic, Bambino, Sport, and Orient Star. Whichever collection you may prefer, you are assured that an Orient timepiece is stylish and reliable.

Citizen

Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Chronograph Watch with Date, AT0200-05E
Citizen Men’s Eco-Drive

Citizen is one of the major brands of another conglomerate in Japan, Citizen Watch Co. Ltd. Since its foundation back in 1918 at Shokosha Watch Research Institute, Citizen has launched a number of exceptional timepieces that left marks in the history of the Japanese watch industry.  From their military-inspired field watches to classic dress watches, Citizen is considered by many to be a great entry-level brand that offers a lot of value for the price.
Nowadays, Citizen is highly-regarded for their stylish, innovative, and high-quality watches. One of its outstanding collections is the Citizen Eco-Drive which is listed among the best solar watches. Citizen is also usually compared with brands of the same price range such as Seiko, Fossil, Garmin, and TW Steel.

Fossil

Fossil Men's Machine Quartz Stainless Steel Chronograph Watch, Color: Grey (Model: FS4931)
Fossil Men’s Machine Quartz

Fossil is not just a simple American watch brand. Aside from its trendy fashion watches in the iconic tin boxes, Fossil also designs, manufactures, and distributes products for other brands such as Armani Exchange, Diesel, Michael Kors, Kate Spade New York, Tony Burch, and many others.
While watch snobs may look down upon Fossil, their watches and the ones they make through licensing agreements are some of the best-selling fashion watches. They have quite a wide range of designs – modern, sporty, classy, etc. The movements used also have quartz and Swiss options. It is pretty much easy to find a Fossil watch that will suit your preference.

Invicta

Invicta Men's 6981 Pro Diver Analog Swiss Chronograph Black Polyurethane Watch
Invicta Men’s 6981 Pro Diver

Invicta is a Swiss watch brand that started way back in 1837. However, many are quite doubtful of Invicta watches because of their affordability.  One of the most common questions we get is how Invicta can be so inexpensive and often on-sale.
Although Invicta boasts of its Swiss heritage, not all of its watches are fully Swiss-made. In fact, many of its products come from Asia and are equipped with Japanese quartz movements. However, it does not mean that Invicta watches are not worth buying. They still do have that luxury aesthetic at a budget price. If you like the look of Invicta with its large and often ornate dials,  they still offer decent quality at very affordable price points.

Solios

Nordgreen Philosopher Scandinavian Gun Metal Men's Analog 40mm (Large Face) with Brown Leather Strap 10007
Solios Solar Watches

Solios is a Canadian watch brand that was started in Montreal by two entrepreneurs. Solios watches are elegant, minimalist, and best of all, solar-powered.
More so, the company’s mission is to create products that are sustainable and would last a lifetime. Having this in mind, the battery of a Solios watch doesn’t need to be replaced as it can be recharged with solar energy. The design is also timeless to go perfectly with whatever fashion trend that may arise.
Lastly, the materials used are carefully chosen and assembled together to produce durable watches. Further, the leather straps are synthetic and not made of animal skin; the packaging is eco-friendly and ionic coloration is used to minimize waste. Read more about the brand here.

Nordgreen

Nordgreen Philosopher Scandinavian Gun Metal Men's Analog 40mm (Large Face) with Brown Leather Strap 10007
Nordgreen Philosopher (Amazon)

Next, we have a very young Danish watch brand – Nordgreen. It started only in 2017 by Jakob Wagner through a Kickstarter campaign. A year after, three of its collections were already successfully launched and funded. Nordgreen specializes in minimalist watches for men and women.
Similar to most Danish companies, Nordgreen supports three charitable causes by giving a portion of its profits. These causes are Water for Good, CoolEarth, and Pratham UK.

Triwa

TRIWA Nevil Men’s Minimalist Watch – Chronograph Wrist Watches for Men, 42mm
TRIWA Nevil Men’s Minimalist Watch

Triwa is another relatively new watch brand that started only in 2007. It was formed by four friends who now hold significant positions in the company. Triwa watches are marked with Scandinavian simplicity and creativity, along with impressive build quality. Their designs are mainly contemporary but the craftsmanship is traditional.
By 2009, Triwa has also expanded its range of products – marketing bracelets and sunglasses as well in its outlet stores.

Armitron

JEN STARK X ARMITRON MESH 001
Armitron Jen Stark

Established in 1975, Armitron strongly holds its place in the world of horology for affordable, durable, and high-quality watches. At the time of its inception, the brand developed LED watches with multiple functions. The advent of modern technology and obsolescence of LED watch displays pushed the brand to further innovate to cater to contemporary needs.
To this extent, the brand features unique online exclusive designs, giving a chance for the audience to freely express themselves without having to go over budget.
For instance, with the Jen Stark collaboration, Armitron has introduced vibrant fun geometrical designs inspired by the artist’s work. The Prismatica for women is a never-seen-before style with a dial that changes its shade with time. The Skeleton, for the men, a new edition watch hosts an automatic movement. The essence of these new aged watches proves without a doubt that Armitron not only stands the test of time as a brand but is also ready to reinvent along with the dynamics of time itself.

AVI-8

AVI-8 Men's AV-4011-01 "Hawker Hurricane" Stainless Steel Watch with Leather Band
AVI-8 Men’s “Hawker Hurricane”

Read as “aviate“, the Avi-8 is a UK-based watch company that specializes in creating pilot watches and other types of timepieces that pay tribute to aviation. Its products in general honors, not just the aircraft, but the designers, engineers, and pilots, as well.
It is still considered a “microbrand” having started only in the mid-2000s by some veterans in the watch industry. These veterans include some historians, aviation enthusiasts, and of course, watchmakers. This is perhaps the reason why Avi-8 watches have a distinctive look compared to other aviation watches. They are also built with premium quality materials and are relatively affordable.

Bulova

Bulova Men's Classic Quartz Watch with Stainless-Steel Strap, Silver, 22 (Model: 96C125)
Bulova Men’s Classic Quartz Watch

Next, we have an American watch brand that started in New York way back in 1875 – the Bulova. As one of the longest-running watch brands, it is not surprising to find various Bulova watches that made their mark in the watch industry, including the Accutron and the Precisionist. There are also some Bulova watches that became more popular because of their exposure in some films.
Bulova is currently one of the subsidiaries of Citizen Watch Co. after the latter acquired it in 1979. Regardless of ownership, Bulova is highly regarded in the watch industry because of the high accuracy, style, and durability of its timepieces. It also showcases quite a wide range of watches – from high-end ones to mid-range and low-end ones that are frequently compared with Seiko.

Luminox

Luminox Mens Watch Leatherback Sea Turtle Giant 44 mm Black Green Display Gold Numbers (XS.0333): 100 M Water Resistant + Super Luminova + Carbonox Case
Luminox Leatherback Sea Turtle Giant 44

To build their market, the two partnered with the US Navy SEALS and other elite units. Because of this, the company is able to build timepieces that are tested and proven to survive in the toughest environments. In fact, its watches made it to our list of Toughest Watches on the Planet.

Guess

GUESS Men's Rigor Iconic Blue Stain Resistant Silicone Watch with Rose Gold-Tone Day + Date (Model: U0247G3)
GUESS Men’s Rigor Iconic

You might be familiar with Guess not because of its watches but maybe because of its lifestyle products such as clothes, denim, and accessories. Yet it doesn’t mean that Guess watches are not worth buying.
Guess watches are manufactured by Sequel AG, a Swiss company that is part of the Timex Group. Primarily fashion watches, Guess timepieces are of course stylish than they are intricate. They are usually equipped with quartz movement, are accurate and reliable.

Nixon

Nixon Time Teller All Gold Women’s Watch (37mm. All Gold Face & Gold Metal Band)
Nixon Time Teller All Gold Women’s Watch

Nixon is another American brand that offers fashion watches. It was founded by Andy Laats and Chad DiNenna in 1997.
Nixon watches are usually compared with Fossil watches considering that they are both fashion watches. It means that Nixon also produces good-quality watches with various designs to cater to both the young and adult markets. Watch collectors may easily dismiss them but for the general public, they surely are worth the price.

Swatch

Swatch Big Bold Quartz Silicone Strap, Transparent, 25 Casual Watch (Model: SO27E100)
Swatch Big Bold Quartz

We’ve mentioned the Swatch Group several times in this post already so now we’ll focus on the said brand. Swatch is undoubtedly one of the biggest watch brands today. It is a Swiss company that was founded by Nicolas Hayek in 1983.
Since its foundation, Swatch was able to establish a good reputation for the quality of its products. Swatch is known for its affordable, creative, and durable watches. Given the size of the company, you would also see a very wide range of watch collections that it offers. To give you a gist, we have listed the Best Swatch Watches for Men and Women.

Skagen

Skagen Men's Jorn Minimalistic Quartz Leather Watch, Color: Brown, 22 (Model: SKW6552)
Skagen Men’s Jorn Quartz Leather Watch

Officially named Skagen Denmark, Skagen, is actually NOT a Danish watch brand. Rather, it is an American brand that also offers jewelry, handbags, and other fashion accessories.
Originally, Skagen watches were produced in Hong Kong. However, in 2012, Fossil bought the license to manufacture its watches so since then the production of Skagen watches is being done in China.
As with its other products, Skagen watches bear simple and minimalist designs. The company believes that simplicity makes the products beautiful and more versatile. Users of Skagen watches opined that the timepieces are perfect for those with small wrists. They also love the titanium case and mesh bands.

Shinola

Shinola Detroit 43 mm Canfield 2 Eye Chrono Midnight Blue/Natural Leather Strap One Size
Shinola Detroit 43 mm Canfield 2

Shinola is another lifestyle brand that manufactures watches, leather, and other goods. It was founded by Tom Kartsotis back in 2011.
Shinola watches are durable, stylish, and affordable. Although it takes pride as being an American brand, some watch enthusiasts criticize their watches because most of the parts used are imported and they are just assembled in Detroit. Nevertheless, the fact that Shinola watches are stylish and sturdy still remains true.

TW Steel

TW Steel Men's Watch TW416
TW Steel Men’s Watch

TW Steel is a Dutch watch brand that makes distinctive oversized watches.
The company was started in 2005 by father and son, Jordy and Ton Cobelens. The distinctive style of TW Steel watches is inspired by women wearing oversized male watches that Jordy saw in nightclubs. Realizing that there’s a demand for such watch styles, TW Steel was launched.
Although TW Steel watches are pretty affordable, the brand has been receiving mixed feedback. Some prefer the brand’s competitors such as Seiko and Fossil; while others simply do not want oversized watches on their wrists. On the other hand, there are also some who admire the looks, styling, quality, and comfort that TW Steel watches offer.

Stuhrling

Stuhrling Original 371.01 Men's Legacy Automatic Self Wind Genuine Leather Strap Watch Black
Stuhrling Original

From several Japanese watch brands above, we now have an American watch company – Stuhrling.
Although the company is still quite new and unknown by many in the watch industry, Stuhrling does offer many unique designs at prices that are hard to beat. One example is their ornate line of top Skeleton watches.
Although the company’s branding pays tribute to the master Swiss watchmaker, Max Stuhrling, Stuhrling watches have little to do with Switzerland.  Although the more expensive models have Swiss movements, as most of its products are manufactured and assembled in Hong Kong. In terms of aesthetics, many find Stuhrling watches as unique, beautiful, and fashionable considering they are relatively affordable.

Hamilton

Hamilton Mens H24411732 Ventura Stainless Steel Watch with Black Leather Band
Hamilton Men’s Ventura

Hamilton originally started in Lancaster, Pennsylvania back in 1893. However, the company’s operations in America ended in 1969. After this, the ownership of the company has gone through various acquisitions and mergers until it became part of the Swatch Group up until today. Along with this, Hamilton is now based in Bienne, Switzerland.
Interestingly, Hamilton watches showcase both their American and Swiss origins. The designs and styles are quite American, while the movements boast of Swiss precision. Because of this, Hamilton is highly regarded compared to other brands in its price group. In fact, many watch enthusiasts feel that the brand is underrated considering the relatively low price points of their watches. While Hamilton watches are not inexpensive to the average entry-level watch buyer, considering their movements and iconic design, such as the Hamilton Ventura pictured above, their watches are a good value.

Tissot

Tissot Men's Chrono XL 316L Stainless Steel case with Black PVD Coating Swiss Quartz Leather Strap, Beige, 22 Casual Watch (Model: T1166173605700)
Tissot Men’s Chrono XL

Back then, it was just a humble assembly shop named Charles-Felicien Tissot & Son in Le Locle, Switzerland. Currently, Tissot is a subsidiary of The Swatch Group after the latter acquired it in 1983. Despite this, Tissot is still based in Switzerland so it takes pride that all its products are Swiss-made.
Tissot is able to maintain the relative affordability of its watches by sourcing all its materials locally, including the movements, and keeping the production and assembly in Switzerland. Because of this, the company is able to reduce the overall production cost. As such, Tissot has built an excellent reputation in the watchmaking industry. Its watches are known to be of great quality and many watch enthusiasts looking for entry-level Swiss mechanical watches will agree that Tissot is one of the more affordable Swiss brands.

Victorinox

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Stainless Steel Watch, 43mm, Black
Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Stainless Steel Watch

Perhaps you’ve encountered the brand name Victorinox for Swiss army knives and not for watches. That’s because Victorinox was started as a supplier of knives to the Swiss army when it started its workshop in 1884. However, throughout its history, the company was able to develop its product range; hence it now includes watches, travel gear, fragrances, and household and professional knives. Although, its primary product is still the Swiss Army knives.

Mondaine watches have the remarkable red second hand and the two-second ‘pause‘. This may seem quite odd at first but it has become widely popular and has gained praise throughout the years. In terms of quality, you won’t be disappointed as they are accurate, legible, and stylish. Also, since Mondaine watches are Swiss-made and affordable, they surely are a good investment.

It was not until 1927 that Junghans started creating wristwatches. By the 1950s, the style of Junghans watches was largely influenced by the designer Max Bill who incorporated the Bauhaus design in the clocks and watches.
At present, Junghans watches are still popular for their Bauhaus-inspired watch design. They may have vintage aesthetics yet the technology used is constantly being innovated. In addition to this, wearers of Junghans watches have only good reviews and recommendations for the brand.

Defined by style and affordability since 1975, Armitron is a leading watch brand in the United States of America. At the time of its inception, the watch company, then called E. Gluck Trading Company, functioned as a subsidiary of the Armin Group. During this time, the watch brand developed various LED and digital watches, using the electronic expertise of its parent company.
With LED watches becoming obsolete, Armitron ventured into developing liquid crystal display watches. Years of reliable performance combined with durability and accuracy paved the way for Armitron to enter the world of sports. To this extent, the brand is the official sponsor of the New York Yankees. Some celebrity patrons of the brand include Jerry Rice, Larry Bird, Daryl Strawberry, and more!
In this article, we’ll be taking a closer look at Armitron’s online exclusive watch collections.

Jen Stark x Armitron

Driven by the philosophy – time is personal – Armitron fuses high-quality watches with unique styles that bring to you a curation of unprecedented designs. The online store of Armitron offers exclusive deals in the spirit of accessibility for all. One such is the Jen Stark Collection.
Vibrant and colorful, the Jen Stark collaboration with Armitron takes inspiration from the artist’s geometrical patterns. Designed to express the individuality and depth of the wearer, this collection signifies the free spirit and function of the brand. This California-based artist, exploring intricate patterns and designs through her art using bright colors, brings together design and functionality with this watch collaboration. Her long-standing success, such as public art installations for Citizen Hotel M, MTV Awards 2015, Miami International Airport, and Hard Rock Stadium, amplifies Armitron’s reach and audience.
Available for both men and women, the Jen Stark X Armitron collection comes in three varieties – with a silicon strap, with a mesh strap, and bands for Apple watches. The timepieces come powered by a quartz movement and are designed in a 40 mm case. The silicon strap complements the design on the face of the dial, giving the watch a cohesive look.
On the other hand, the mesh strap edition uses either gold, silver, or black mesh, with a vibrant dial. The face of the dial takes a simple, clean design with just dash marks for numerals. The geometric patterns on the dial empower the wearer to freely express themselves, with a flair for unmatched style.
Both these editions, available at an affordable price point, make for a perfect daily companion with a promise of durability. The Apple watch band, on the other hand, comes in two unique designs – a vivid colorful one and a more subdued monochrome option.

Women’s Online Exclusive Collections

Besides the Jen Stark-inspired watches, the Armitron online store also hosts some classic watches for women.
The Prismatica is yet another innovative and colorful watch introduced by the brand. The Prismatica displays a dial that changes color with the change in time. Currently, the gold, rose gold, and silver shade watches are available for purchase. This edition also features an Iridescent shade, available to pre-order.
All four timepieces display different dial shades in a 33.5 mm case. The face of the dial showcases a clean analog movement, and the outer bezel of the watch indicates the minute markings. With a design and style unlike any other in the market, the Prismatica is sure to be a hit with the ladies!
In addition to these contemporary designs, it is worth mentioning the Grand and Griffy editions as well. The Grand watches take after a retro-classic design in an octagonal 37 mm case. The face also displays a date and day window. The Grand edition aims to bring back the vintage hits with a modern twist. On the other hand, we have the Griffy edition, a retake of the ’70s design with a LED display. An extremely affordable digital watch with contemporary styling, the Griffy offers a smart look for the urban woman.

Men’s Online Exclusive Collections

Much like for the women, the men’s collection on the online exclusive store features the Armitron Horizon collection, Armitron Tactical Chrono collection, the Grand collection, the Skeleton Collection, and more.
If you are looking for a chunky, smart, and affordable watch, the Armitron Horizon offers attractive timepieces. A pro sports watch with 330 feet water resistance, a chronograph, a countdown timer, alarm, and a dual timezone, the Horizon comes fitted in a 55 mm case. The Resin band offers the utmost durability for activities without easy damage.
In a similar vein to the Horizon, Armitron also introduced the Tactical Chrono collection. Taking a more military-like design, this edition comes with similar functionality as the Horizon, but in a slightly smaller dial made to fit in a 53 mm case. Both these editions personify a rugged, sporty design for the adventurous soul.
The Skeleton is another marvelous timepiece by Armitron worth highlighting. Currently available to pre-order,  this edition comes in black or silver bracelet. The face of the watch proudly presents the 21 jewels automatic movement, offering a peek into the stunning working of the brand’s craftsmanship.
One thing is for certain – Armitron harmonizes the art of watchmaking with highly functional design and quality. With different editions taking different styles, the brand’s ethos forms the underlying keystone of their success. Above all, affordability without a compromise on quality makes the brand an undefeated competition in the world of horology. Bringing back vintage designs with a modern reinvention takes a certain fineness. And, Armitron has mastered what it takes to make stylish watches affordable to all!
